INFORMATION TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC (Gurjo)

National Campaign on Tinospora cordifolia (Gurjo) in Sikkim
State Medicinal Plants Board, Forests & Environment Department, Government of Sikkim is implementing the “National Campaign on Tinospora cordifolia (Gurjo)” in Sikkim which has been funded by National Medicinal Plants Board, Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.
The Campaign was launched in the State on 5th June 2020 during the World Environment Day Programme through His Excellency the Governor of Sikkim, Shri. Ganga Prasad Chaurasia and Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri. P.S. Tamang.
“Gurjo” (Tinospora Cordifolia) is a woody climber found in the tropical and sub tropical areas of Sikkim. In Hindi, the plant is commonly known as Giloy. The plant grows in subtropical and tropical climate. Stem cuttings obtained from older stems with nodes can be sown directly.
USES
• Gurjo helps in curing diabetes, alleviates stress, improves memory, reduces chances of high blood pressure, useful in resisting respiratory problems, useful in treating chronic fever, reduces the signs and symptom of conditions like Dengue, Malaria, Swine flu, etc. It also improves eyesight, contains anti-ageing properties and is also believed to be a viable natural remedy for curing cancer.
• Developing a strong immune system has become imperative in these times and as such “Gurjo” is being widely promoted during current COVID 19 pandemic as an ayurvedic medicine to improve the immune system and the body resistance against infections as a natural immune booster.
How to Use
· The powder of Gurjo stem boiled with milk can be taken to cure arthritis and other joint pains.
· Chewing of Gurjo root or drinking Gurjo juice helps in asthma.
· A fine paste of Gurjo leaves with castor or neem oil helps in the treatment of wounds and cuts.
· Intake of fresh leaves enhances the platelet count of a person.
· Extract of crushed Gurjo stem (6inches approx.) soaked overnight in water can be taken daily next morning after boiling for overall immunity boosting.
But, as not enough is known about its use during pregnancy and breast-feeding, it can be avoided to be in safer side. Moreover, Gurjo might lower the blood sugar levels thus; people with diabetes should monitor their blood sugar levels regularly.
FREE DISTRIBUTION OF GURJO SAPLINGS
Nursery raised saplings along with information brochures are being distributed all over Sikkim from 16th June onwards. The distribution will be done from stalls at MG Marg (Gangtok), Central Park (Namchi), Geyzing & Legship Forest Check Post (West), Pakshep Forest Check Post (Mangan), Phodong Range Office, and the saplings will also be available at Mamring herbal nursery (South), Rorathang herbal nursery & Bageykhola Forest nursery (East), Namshing & Tingda herbal nursery, Dikchu Forest nursery (North).
All interested are requested to collect required no. of saplings from the nearest distribution booths as above.
