The celebration of 'Rashtriya Poshan Maah' with regard to the Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture Resources and Innovations (NARI)

Namthang, 17th September (IPR): The celebration of 'Rashtriya Poshan Maah' with regard to the Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture Resources and Innovations (NARI), an initiative under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) was held at Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Namthang, today.
The Hon'ble Chairman for Sikkim Poultry Development Board Shri. Krishna Gurung graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The program had the presence of BDO (Namthang) Shri Ram K. Tamang ,Senior Scientist Shri. I.P Shivakoti, CDPO ( Namchi) Shri. Laxman Tamang, Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture) Smt. Yangchenla Bhutia, CHO (Namthang) Smt. Neelam Dahal, Nutrition Inspector(Namchi) Smt. Sophia Lepcha along with ICDS supervisors, Anganwadi workers and staff of KVK, Namthang.
Addressing the gathering, Hon'ble Chairman Shri. Krishna Gurung said in order to achieve the objectives of Kuposhan Mukt Bharat, collective efforts from the concerned department and grassroots workers is needed
He also emphasized that increased awareness on the nutritional diet for young children, pregnant women and lactating women is extremely important especially for masses at grass-root level. He informed that one can also utilized areas available in the household wherein they can grow and consume various vegetables and fruits, this activity can also be a recreational activity for the individual as well.
He also spoke about various benefits of a rare breed of chicken 'Kadaknath' which is rich in vitamin and proteins and extended his support for ICDS centres and to cater the needs for the supplement as nutritional diet.
Shri. IP Shivakoti highlighted the aims and objectives of NARI. He informed about the various measures with regard to the NARI initiative undertaken by the KVK Namthang focussing on the nutrition-sensitive agriculture. He emphasized to promote nutritional literacy, Nutri garden in the household and centres of Anganwadi workers to achieve the goal of malnutrition free. In addition, he also informed that the KVK shall provide technical support for the setting up of Nutritional Garden in the centres. He advised ensuring for the fruitfulness of the scheme as varieties of nutritional seeds are being distributed for the nutritional garden so as to attain the proper nutritional diet for the students.
CDPO, Namchi Shri Laxman Tamang briefly informed about government schemes that have been introduced and implemented in the District. He said that ICDS centres have also taken up the initiative of Nutritional Garden where seasonal fruits and vegetables are encouraged to grow at home.
He also spoke on the deficiency of nutrition among children and highlighted the efforts of the concerned departments in which the measurement of Severe Acute Malnutrition and Moderate Acute Malnutrition children have also been undertaken in ICDS centres in order to identify and help them attain a healthier life.
To make the students aware of the importance of Nutritional value in one's life, essay writing, drawing and painting competition have been organised in coordination with the education department.
During the program, the distribution of agriculture tools along with nutritional seeds was handed over to the ICDS supervisors and anganwadi workers by the Chief Guest.
At the outset of the program, plantation drive in the premises of KVK was held.
The program saw an in-depth lecture on Poshan Maah, Nutri- Garden and Nutritional Diet presented by the technical experts.
A special feature film on the methods of setting up of Nutritional Gardens was also showcased during the program.
