70TH ALL INDIA COOPERATIVE WEEK CELEBRATION’

Pakyong, 20 November (IPR): The 70th All India Cooperative Week Celebration organised by Sikkim State Cooperative Union (SICUN), in collaboration with Cooperation Department, Government of Sikkim, commenced at the auditorium hall of SICUN, Assam Lingzey, today.
The Cooperative week is observed every year at a national level as a way to bring the public into knowledge of cooperative awareness and to strengthen connections with the cooperative movement.
"Role of Cooperatives in Making a $5 Trillion Economy and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" was the celebration's overarching topic, while today's theme was "Strengthening Public-Private Cooperative Partnership."
During the programme, Ms Pema Ongmu- Registrar, Cooperation Department delivered messages from the Governor, Mr Lakshman Prasad Acharya and the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Singh Tamang.
Likewise, Mr KP Sharma- Registrar, Cooperation Department recited message of Ven Sonam Lama- Minister, Cooperation Department.
As the distinguished Chief Guest, Mr. BB Chettri- Chairman, Cooperation Department, lauded the cooperatives for their commitment in improving people's lives and bolstering the sector. He stressed the need to strengthen the cooperative movement and utilise the platform to bring socio-economic upliftment. He also encouraged the members to work in collaboration with the department to create numerous employment opportunities.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Tashi Ongden Lepcha- Chairman, SICUN, highlighted the achievements and challenges of the cooperative societies in the district and extended gratitude to the Multipurpose Cooperative Society (MPCS) for their indispensable contribution to socio-economic advancement.
He underscored the stakeholders in various employment sectors, including health cooperative tourism and village and youth cooperative tourism, and urged them to actively participate and dedicate themselves to fostering entrepreneurship for a sustainable livelihood.
Sharing a brief background on the establishment of SICUN, Mr Nakul Das Rai, former MP of Lok Sabha and founder of SICUN, highlighted the role played by cooperative institutions in bridging the rural-urban gap and creating opportunities for income generation. He further urged the officials to actively engage themselves in disseminating information about the initiatives and schemes undertaken by the department through awareness campaigns.
Further, Mr Phadung Bhutia- CEO SICUN, gave detailed insights on the diverse range of schemes initiated by the cooperative department and stressed the need for diversification of business activities.
The day also witnessed felicitations for Mr Pritam Rai, winner of Mero Voice Universe, along with cultural programmes by students from various schools.
Also present at the event were Dr. Mangal Jit Rai- Chairman, National Cooperative Dairy Federation of India; Mr Ganza Denzongpa-Chairman, Excise Department ; Mr Yam Prasad Sharma- Chairman, Sikkim Milk Union; Ms Gloria Namchu- Secretary Cooperation Department; Mr PK Subba-OSD, Agriculture and Horticulture; Mr Hemant Kumar Dahal- Vice President, SICUN; Ms Jabi Thapa- Principal Registrar, Cooperation Department; Ms Karma Ongmu- Registrar, Cooperation Department; Mrs Kesang Yanki- Additional Registrar, Cooperation Department; along with Zilla Panchayats, Presidents from different MPCS, officers from various department, and executive members of SICUN.
