Gangtok, 17th May 2022 (IPR): A Seminar on "Sikkim's Contribution Towards Indian National Movement" as a part of the State Day Celebration was held at Hotel Sinclairs, Zero Point, today.
The event had the presence of Prof. Heeraman Tiwari, Chairperson (Centre for Historical Studies) CHS-JNU, New Delhi as a chief guest, along with Vice-Chancellor Prof Avinash Khare, Shri K.V.S Kameshwar Rao, Registrar, Deans, HODs and Senior Professor, Controllers of Examination, Statutory Officers, Faculties of various departments, Scholars and students of Sikkim University.
Prof. Heeraman Tiwari expressed his gratitude for being present at the Seminar. He said that it is indeed an opportunity for him to share his views about the history of our country. He stated that history is very important. When we learn more about the subject, we tend to associate ourselves with our past, which helps us understand and identify the direction in which we are heading in the present.
Likewise, he said that Sikkim has its regional history, which every individual should cherish and at the same time learn from past experiences related to different societies, systems, ideologies, and cultures and how they coexisted and changed our identities to establish citizenship.
Prof Heeraman cited examples of various historians who researched our history and shared their knowledge about the historical facts. He said that there are many ways to discuss the past and its meaning. However, it relies on the perspective of the people and the society on how they look upon and how through history, they can begin to comprehend the factors that cause change affecting the lives of citizens.
He further expressed that history is a process that uses memory to represent the past, and studying history helps us understand how our views of history shape the way we view the present. Therefore, without it, society would not understand triumphs and failures. We would continually repeat patterns without moving forward for something better.
Lastly, he concluded by saying the study of history is, in fact, very useful not only to get to know about the certified heroes, the great men, and women who successfully worked through moral dilemmas but also help us to understand someone else's perspective about human life and society.
The event was followed by a series of lectures and interactive sessions where all the queries were answered and discussed thoroughly.
The one-day seminar was organized by the Sikkim University in association with the Government of Sikkim and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
Earlier, the welcome note was delivered by VC Prof. Avinash Khare, and later the event concluded with a vote thanks was proposed by Shri K.V.S Kameshwar Rao.
