Life and Mobility Skill Training at JNMI

Namchi, 15th February (IPR): A four-week-long 'Life and Mobility Skill Training' program commenced at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute for the Visually Handicapped (JNMI), Boomtar today. DC (South) Shri. M. Bharani Kumar graced the occasion as the Chief Guest also present amongst others were Deputy Director (SJ&WD) Shri. Nakul Rawat and Principal (JNMI) Shri. Samuel Subba, along with students and teachers. The Resources Persons for the training are from National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (NIEPVD), Dehradun and from Composite Regional Centre (CRC) For Skill Development, Rehabilitation and Empowerment of Persons with Disability, Sikkim.
NIEPVD is a premier Institute in the field of visual disability working under the administrative control of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. The Institute is committed to promoting the rights and dignity of persons with visual impairments. Whereas, CRC has been set up by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment in various states to provide both preventive and promotional aspects of rehabilitation like education, health, employment and vocational training, research and manpower development, rehabilitation for persons with disabilities and many more.
Addressing, the gathering DC Shri. M. Bharani Kumar spoke about the importance of this training program which will further assist the students of this Institute in gaining additional knowledge and further develop their skills. This program will reorient the students to learn new and upcoming lessons varying from online to offline mode. He also shared the inspiring story of Smt. Beno Zephine, the first 100 per cent visually-challenged person to gain entry into Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and said that she is an inspiring figure who never let her disability come in her way of achieving her dreams, with this regard he urged the students present to work hard and follow their dreams like Smt. Beno Zephine and be successful in their endeavours.
Speaking, about the programme Principal (JNMI) Shri. Samuel Subba thanked the resource persons for imparting the training. Additionally, he urged the students and the teachers to take full advantage of this program as he said the resource persons are expert and well equipped in providing quality education required by the institute.
It may be mentioned that this training was initiated by former SDM (Namchi) Shri. Agawane Rohan, who helped in securing standard and experienced facilitator to coach the students and teachers of JNMI.
During the course of the programme a Support Smart Cane, Talking Phone and Daisy Player aimed for the convenience and accessibility of visually impaired was also distributed. The resource persons will also teach the students and teachers on how to use these devices and other equipment as well.
