Namchi, 14th May: A day-long programme on Mahila Sabha cum Women and Child Development Programme was organised by 39 Damthang Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU) at Gram Prasasan Kendra, Damthang, yesterday.
The programme had the presence of Smt. Tshering Dem Bhutia Hon’ble Zilla Adakshya, South District, Zilla Panchayat (SDZP) as the Chief Guest,
Shri. Tenzing Bhutia, Block Development Officer (BDO), Namchi as the Special Guest, the resource persons Advocate Miss Geeta Subba, Session Court Namchi, Miss Roshnila Gurung, District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), Namchi, Dr Kamala Pariyar, Medical Officer (MO), Temi, PHC, and the public of Damthang GPU.
The programme began by offering khadas and bouquets to the Chief Guest and other guests followed by a welcome address by Hon’ble Panchayat President of Damthang, GPU. He highlighted the aims and objectives for organising the programme.
The first technical session of the day was presented by Advocate Smt. Geeta Subba on the topic ‘Domestic Violence and Legal Act’. Smt. Subba in her lecture provided detailed elaborations on the subjects of domestic violence, and violence at the workplace with special reference to cases of sexual and mental harassment. In her lecture, the resource person also explained the legalities of procedures to address issues of domestic violence and sexual harassment.
The technical session on the topic ‘Women empowerment and Child Development’ was delivered by Miss Roshnila Gurung, District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), Namchi District. Miss Roshnila Gurung gave detailed accounts of the types of harassment faced by a child and also the functioning of session/juvenile police was mentioned in the lecture. The resource person also handled the intricacies of ‘POCSO’ in much detail.
The final technical session for the day was delivered by Dr Kamala Pariyar, Medical Officer (MO), Temi PHC on the topic ‘Women’s health’. During her session, Dr Kamala Pariyar explained the nutritional aspects and the vaccination schedules of pregnant women. Elaborations on the subjects of health and diseases mainly related to women viz. breast cancer, cervical cancer, hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism etc was made by the doctor in a language simplified for the understanding of the common people.
With the highly informative technical sessions primarily addressing women’s issues the ‘Mahila Sabha cum Women and Child Development Programme at the Gram Prasasan Kendra, Damthang also witnessed a felicitation programme. The felicitation programme was to appreciate and congratulate some brilliant and talented achievers of the locality. The listed receipts of the felicitations are as follows:

Following the felicitations, a token for the floor carpet and the chair was also distributed by the President, GPU, and Damthang to Pakchey, Chemchey and Lower Jaubari ICDS.
Shri Tenzing Bhutia, Block Development Officer, Namchi who was present as a special guest informed the gathering about the state government’s new initiative for the educated unemployed the ‘Mega Job Mela’. The BDO also provided details about the ongoing governmental schemes like the Old Age Pension (OAP) and the Unmarried Allowances.
Smt. Tshering Dem Bhutia, Hon’ble Zilla Adyaksha, South District Zilla Panchayat (SDZP), the Chief guest of the event in her address appreciated the GPUs effort for conducting a women-centric programme. She expressed her happiness that the programme was able to address so many important issues relating to women and children on a platform as diverse as this. She also congratulated the recipients of the felicitations.
The vote of thanks by the Panchayat Secretary, Mr Pempa Sonam Sherpa marked the closing of the programme.
