82nd Birth Anniversary of Padma Shri BB Muringla observed in the capital today
Gangtok, April 3 (IPR): The Sikkim Limboo Language Teachers’ Association (SLLTA), in collaboration with the Sikkim Yakthung Sapsok Songjumbo (SYSS) and Yakthung Sapsok Saplon Chumbo Sukhim, organised the 82nd birth anniversary of Padma Shri BB Muringla at Limboo Bhavan, DPH Road, today.
The programme was graced by Chief Guest Mr Bal Muringla, Associate Professor at Sikkim University, Yangang, along with Guest of Honour Mr AB Khewa, Secretary Roads and Bridges Department.
The event commenced with a welcome address delivered by Mr HB Pandhak, ATBO Language Section Education Department who is also the President of SLLTA, highlighted Padma Shri BB Muringla’s immense contributions to Limboo literature. He also emphasised the role of the Sikkim Limboo Language Teachers’ Association in safeguarding and promoting the Limboo language, stressing that unity and shared responsibility are essential for its development.
A biographical presentation on Padma Shri BB Muringla was delivered by Ms Sanjoit Subba, PGT Siribadam SSS, followed by a discussion on his literary works and the legacy he left behind. A tribute song was presented by Mr Ashit Thegim, PGT Bongten SSS Gyalshing District.
The Vice President of SYSS, Mr SB Subba commended the five Limboo language teachers who were recognised for their contributions by the Sikkim Limboo Language Teachers’ Association. He expressed that such recognition is crucial for educators and suggested seeking sponsorship for awards from next year. SLLTA founded recently on November 17, 2024 is in its infant stage, however SYSS will support and encourage SLLTA in all its endeavour, he added.
He further highlighted that such events strengthen the community and urged Limboo language teachers to lead by example by wearing traditional attire in classrooms, as students are greatly influenced by what they observe. He stressed the importance of raising awareness for community development and encouraged collaboration with organisations to promote the Limboo language and culture.
Padma Shri BB Muringla Commendation Awards were presented to five Limboo language teachers for their contributions:
- Mr Deoman Limboo (Hondhok) Khamdhak, Primary Teacher
- Mr Santa Bir Subba, Primary Teacher
- Mr Sanja Man Shetling, Daramdin Kripaslyan Primary Teacher
- Ms Shanti Devi Man, Graduate Teacher
- Ms Dhagi Maya Maden Sambha, Graduate Teacher
On behalf of the awardees, Mr Deoman Limboo (Hondhok) Khamdhak expressed gratitude to the organisers.
Additionally, retired teachers from 2022-2024 were felicitated for their dedicated service. Speaking on behalf of the retired teachers, Mr SM Hembya expressed gratitude for the recognition.
Guest of Honour Mr AB Khewa, Secretary Roads and Bridges Department, in his address, expressed his gratitude and admiration for the contribution of Padma Shri BB Muringla towards the Limboo community.
He recalled Mr BB Muringla’s efforts in promoting the Limboo language and stated that it is because of him that children today can study Limboo from kindergarten to PhD. He further acknowledged that many language teachers are now able to earn their livelihood due to his dedication and contributions.
"May we continue to follow his legacy, and may he rest in eternal peace. He showed us the path, and it is our duty to carry forward his work," he remarked.
He considered the younger generation fortunate to have such an inspiring figure to look up to. "On his birth anniversary, let us continue to celebrate this day in his honour with unity and dedication," he urged.
In his address, Chief Guest Mr Bal Muringla underscored the significance of preserving indigenous languages and traditions.
He thanked the organisers for the successful execution of the programme and highlighted the contributions of Padma Shri BB Muringla towards the development of the community.
He also acknowledged the efforts of language teachers and the role of the Sikkim Limboo Language Teachers’ Association, referring to them as the backbone of language development.
He suggested continuing the good work by organising awareness programmes and workshops on culture and tradition.
The programme also saw the release of SLLTA's magazine 'Sajum Sawa Sokpewa' and cultural performances by Limboo language students.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr Bal Hang Khamdhak, Secretary YSSCS Geyzing.
It is to note that SLLTA aims to observe April 3 every year as Padma Shri BB Muringla’s Birth Anniversary to pay respect to the immense contribution he made towards the development, promotion, and preservation of Limboo language, literature, and culture.
