Definition of a Cooperative Society:
 
A Cooperative society is an autonomous organization of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, socio and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise. Cooperatives are based on the values of self help, self responsibility, democracy, equality and solidarity. The seven principles of cooperatives provide guidance to put their values into practice. These form of organizations are promoted globally by different polity irrespective of their political ideologies.

Function of Cooperation Department:

Cooperation Department is an institution based Department mandated to organize and promote cooperative societies. The primary function of the Cooperation Department is promotion of Cooperative Movement, administration of available capacity and creation of need for cooperative way of life. Besides, the Department also regulates any law and litigation arising in cooperative societies due to disputes, conducts audit of cooperatives, periodically provides management guidelines and such other functions conducive in the attainment of objectives of the department.
