Fisheries Department
Fisheries in Sikkim was established in the year of 1974 under the Forest Department as Wildlife wing. Initially the Fisheries wing was mainly focused on conservation of riverine fish species and development of sport fishing. Later on, fisheries establishment was upgraded from a wing to divisional level and finally to Directorate level in 1995. In the year 2004, the Directorate of Fisheries was transferred under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Vet. Services. In the year 2024, Directorate of Fisheries has been declared as Fisheries Department vide Notification No. 21/Home/2024 dt. 8.3.2024 . Recently the approach to fisheries development was given a new direction and the conventional programmes were revised with the following mandates:
- To increase fish production or productivity from all culturable water resources.
- To protect and conserve riverine fisheries resources.
- To undertake breeding programme of Carp, Trout and Mahaseer fish from stocking in ponds, raceways, rivers, lakes and reservoirs.
- To promote game fishing for tourism.
- To promote commercial farming of rainbow trout in high altitude areas.
- To promote Aquaculture by providing technical and financial assistance to the farmers and unemployed youths.
