Reviving Roots: Pakyong’s Mission to Cultivate Fallow Lands Yields Promising Results
Pakyong, May 24:
In a stride toward sustainable rural development, the Additional District Collector Development Office in Pakyong District has announced the successful implementation of Episode 37 of the Friday Field/Farm Day – Mission Revival of Fallow Land for Cultivation. The programme marks a milestone in the district’s agricultural revival strategy, drawing widespread praise from government bodies and the local community alike.
This mission, envisioned as a grassroots movement, gained momentum through a robust collaborative effort involving government officials, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), line departments, and enthusiastic public participation. With fallow lands now being reclaimed and cultivated, the district is witnessing a revival in rural livelihoods and economic activity.
A pivotal aspect of this initiative has been the active involvement of PRIs, empowered under the 73rd Amendment of the Indian Constitution (1992). This amendment elevated Panchayati Raj Institutions to constitutional status, granting them authority over 29 subjects, including agriculture — a core area in this mission.
Among the critical sectors mobilised under Panchayat jurisdiction were:
Agriculture and Agricultural Extension
Land Improvement and Soil Conservation
Minor Irrigation
Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services
Education, Health, and Rural Development
The Additional District Collector Dev Office extended appreciation to the many individuals and departments who played vital roles. Special commendations were given to:
Mr Bhim Bahadur Gurung, Joint Director
Mr Raju Pradhan, Deputy Secretary
Officers and Staff of ADC Development Office
Panchayats, Assistant Directors of PRIs, and various line departments that contributed towards the program’s seamless execution.
Block Development Officers (BDOs) across the district:
Mr Sangay Tamang – BDO Pakyong
Mr Kewal Sharma – BDO Parakha
Mr Chophel Bhutia – BDO Duga
Mr Rajesh Dahal – BDO Namcheybong
Mr Shanti Sharma – BDO Rhenock
Mr Anil Kumar Giri
Key departments involved included Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, and Cooperatives. This integrated approach ensured technical and infrastructural support and also inspired community members to resume traditional farming practices — now with a modern, sustainable edge.
The results speak volumes: increased crop yields, enhanced local employment, and a significant contribution to the district’s GDP.
The Office of the Additional District Collector (Dev) expresses its sincere gratitude to all stakeholders for their valuable support and contributions that led to the success of this initiative and ensures to remain committed to pursuing similar programme in the future with the goal of revitalising fallow lands, boosting agricultural productivity, and fostering sustainable development across the district.
