Two-day workshop on Special Numeracy Programme held from 19-23 May 2025
A two-day workshop under the Special Numeracy Programme was organized by the SCERT, Education Department, Government of Sikkim for members of the State Resource Group (SRG), Supporting Mentor Teachers (SMTs), and Nodal Teachers from six districts of the state, focusing on assessment practices for Classes 1, 2, and 3 for Term 1.
The primary objective of the workshop was to equip key educational personnel with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct effective and age-appropriate assessments and to enable them to facilitate subsequent training sessions for teachers at the 44 cluster levels scheduled from 28th to 30th May 2025.
The workshop was conducted in two phases: the first phase on 19th and 20th May 2025 at Namchi Boys’ Senior Secondary School (Namchi district), Geyzing Girls’ Senior Secondary School (Gyalshing district), and Mangan Senior Secondary School (Mangan district); and the second phase on 22nd and 23rd May 2025 at Deorali Girls’ Senior Secondary School (Gangtok district), Rangpo Mining Senior Secondary School (Pakyong district), and Soreng Senior Secondary School (Soreng district).
The workshop featured a comprehensive agenda including orientation on the Special Numeracy Programme, sessions on competency-based assessment practices, and hands-on activities for designing classroom-based assessments. A significant highlight of the workshop was the live demonstration classes with children of Classes 1, 2, and 3, which provided participants with practical insight into implementing assessment strategies in real-time classroom settings.
Additionally, participants viewed a video presentation showcasing assessment practices conducted in a nodal school, which served as a model for contextual application. Teachers were also provided with draft assessment plans to help them visualize and adapt the structure for their upcoming cluster-level trainings. Each participant received a resource kit containing handbooks, sample assessments, and recording templates.
The interactive and reflective nature of the training sessions, along with practical demonstrations and resource support, was highly appreciated by all attendees.
The workshop concluded with a planning session to support the successful rollout of the cluster-level trainings, marking a significant step toward strengthening foundational learning and assessment practices in the early grades across Sikkim.
The workshop also had the presence of Dr. Rabin Chhetri, Director, SCERT and the programme was coordinated by Mr. Rajiv Philip (Deputy Director, SCERT), Mr. Kuldip Sharma (Senior Lecturer, SCERT), and Mr. Dhiraj Sharma (Headmaster attached to SCERT),
