Awards and Felicitations Mark National Doctors' Day 2021

Gangtok, July 01 (IPR): A Felicitation Function was organized at Raj Bhawan today to mark National Doctors’ Day 2021. The function was graced by the Hon’ble Governor, Shri. Ganga Prasad, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri. Prem Singh Tamang, Hon’ble Cabinet Ministers, Chief Secretary, Director General cum Secretary Health, senior officers, doctors, and awardees.
The Hon’ble Governor, Shri. Ganga Prasad, in his address, mentioned that National Doctors' Day is observed across the country to acknowledge the work and effort of doctors in saving lives. He mentioned that National Doctors' Day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who was also a freedom fighter of India and the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, whose great contributions in the field of medicine is unparalleled.
He mentioned that doctors, nurses, paramedics, ASHA workers and other front line workers have relentlessly devoted their service to fight against COVID-19 pandemic. They have not only treated patients but have put their own lives at stake to give a new life to others, and that all the appreciation and honour in words will always fall short.
He mentioned that about 800 doctors lost their lives to COVID-19 in India, and on this occasion, he paid his tribute to those lives lost and offered his heartfelt condolences to their families.
The Hon’ble Governor said that like the saying goes ‘need is the root of invention’, likewise in Sikkim, during the pandemic, testing labs were set up, oxygen plant was established and various other works in the health sector were carried out.
He also mentioned that Sikkim has very good medical facilities, good doctors, good hospitals and the way they served the Sikkimese citizen is beyond commendable.
He concluded his address by extending his heartfelt gratitude and warm greetings to all the doctors and frontline workers who have proved that there is no greater duty than service during the course of pandemic. He extended his warm greetings to the doctors on the occasion of National Doctors’ Day.
The Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri. Prem Singh Tamang congratulated and greeted the doctors on the occasion of National Doctors Day and Felicitation Function. He thanked the Hon’ble Governor, Shri. Ganga Prasad for hosting this first-of-its kind-function to felicitate the doctors and frontline workers.
The Hon’ble Chief Minister highlighted the significance of the day and said that Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy is one of the greatest sources of inspiration of India and his life is one to imbibe from. He is not only inspirational for doctors and politicians, but for every citizen of the country.
The Hon’ble Chief Minister mentioned that amidst the greatest challenge brought on by COVID-19, the State Government did not falter in fighting it. He extended his heartfelt gratitude to every department of the State Government and the Health Department for its relentless and selfless service to the people of Sikkim.
He mentioned that the health sector went beyond its capability, showed strength during the weakest period and for which he is wholeheartedly proud and grateful. He also proudly informed the new establishments of ICUs, rooms, ventilator, dedicated COVID Hospital amongst other infrastructure development in the health sector.
The Hon’ble Chief Minister extended his gratitude towards the Hon’ble Governor, for his concern and guidance to tackle the difficulties brought on by pandemic in the State.
The Hon’ble Chief Minister informed that despite the Pandemic the State Government established Dialysis Centre in District Hospitals, and aims to set up a cancer hospital with the latest facilities at Karfectar, for which the budget has been allocated for the year 2021-22.
He informed that during the Pandemic, 404 medical employees that include doctors, specialists, super specialists, nurses, dentists, dental surgeons were recruited and 30 GDMOs are in the process of being recruited with relaxation in the roster, to increase the manpower in the Medical Field.
The Hon’ble Chief Minister mentioned that he is proud of the doctors, nurses, paramedics and urged the citizens to trust the healthcare facilities of their homeland, now more than ever.
The Hon’ble Governor joined the Hon’ble Chief Minister in conferring Awards and felicitations to doctors, nurses, District Collectors and Superintendent of Police of all the four districts, and front line workers.
The function was addressed by Hon'ble Minister for Health, Dr. M.K. Sharma, Chief Secretary Shri S.C. Gupta and DG-cum-Secretary, Health, Dr. Pempa T. Bhutia. On the occasion, District Collectors of various districts also shared their experiences
