Awareness Programme on “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao”

The Women and Child Development Department Soreng, in collaboration with Don Bosco School Malbasey organized an awareness programme on the theme "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” at the auditorium of Don Bosco School, today.
Mr Dhiraj Subedi District Collector (Soreng) attended the programme as the chief guest. He was accompanied by Mr DR Bista ADC, Mr Prem K Subba SDM (HQ), Mr Santosh Kumar Alley SDM (Mangalbarey), Ms Gauri Tamang CDPO, Ms Lata Bardewa PI (Soreng), Ms Aeromeena Lepcha LO/PO (Soreng), Ms Yamuna Dhungel Health Counsellor, teachers and students.
Mr Dhiraj Subedi addressed the house, emphasizing the goals of the "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" campaign launched by the Government of India. He highlighted on various key topics that included gender equality, gender justice, legal and financial literacy, awareness on substance abuse and sexual abuses and employment-oriented education.
He then stressed upon the scheme “Sukanya Samriddi Yojana” which was launched under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign that aims at providing financial security for girl children under the age of 10.
Additionally, Ms Aeromeena Lepcha provided insights through a powerpoint presentation regarding the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act-2012, discussing its legal framework and measures to safeguard children from exploitation and abuse.
The programme also included an awareness on menstrual hygiene conducted by Ms Yamuna Dhungel (Heath Counsellor), which focused on menstrual cycle education, symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and proper usage and disposal of sanitary napkins and hygiene etiquettes. She also recommended the installation of vending machines for sanitary napkins within the school to ensure easy access for students.
During the course of the programme, Ms Lata Bardewa PI (Soreng) briefed the house about Sikkim Anti-Drugs Act, 2006 (SADA) and its provisions aimed at controlling illegal substance use. Further, she specifically highlighted the impact of drug abuse among youth. Citing various examples, she then touched upon Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, 1985 (NDPS) which deals with narcotic drug or psychotropic substance prohibition in India.
The chief guest along with other guests were honored with a token of appreciation led by Mr DR Bista (ADC), Father Rector Florence Dempta (Principal) and Father Nijo John (Vice Principal), while the programme also features cultural dance performances and a stand-up comedy.
Initially, the welcome address was delivered by Ms Gauri Tamang CDPO while the vote of thanks was proposed by Mr DR Bista ADC (Soreng).
