Awareness Programme on Open Source Classes for Amateur Radio completed at DAC Soreng

Soreng, September 11th (IPR): Today a Kolkata-based group known as Open Source Classes for Amateur Radio (OSCAR) an initiative powered by AISMIT (All India School of Management and Information Technology) to develop HAM radio in India an awareness, training and orientation program was held at the Conference Hall (DAC), Soreng.
The programme was chaired by Sunny Kharel SDM (Soreng) accompanied by subject experts and OSCAR officials Mr Tanumay Chakraborty (Kolkata) and Mr Vishal CK Gupta (Delhi). The programme was also attended by the officials and staff from Soreng District Disaster Management Authority and IT Department Soreng.
The Awareness, Training and Orientation Program was for promoting the use of HAM Radio and the formation of an ECRT (Emergency Communication Response Team) which is basically a team constituted to communicate from one place to another at the time of an emergency.
The introduction was given by Mr Vishal CK Gupta on how the use of Ham radio as an essential tool can bridge the communication gap faced during disasters when the mobile network ceases to operate.
Mr Vishal explained the concept of ‘Amateur Radio’ as a community of people who operate the Radio, communicate with people and satellites in space, and provide volunteer community and emergency services, however, he stated to operate the device one needs to obtain a HAM licence.
He briefed on the procedures to obtain the license and the subject materials which come up for the exams in the process and referred to further details available at the saralsanchar.gov.in site.
Further, he explained the uses of phonetics in communicating through the device and the use of handle names as a part of the manner in which the radio community communicates and explained the various devices and their functions and features.
Thereon, Mr Tanumay Chakraborty brought in focus the examples of the communication barriers one faces in times of disaster from his own experience relating to the Uttarakhand Cloud Burst. He stressed how to tackle difficulties in times of disaster with the use of these devices. He then demonstrated with descriptions, the devices and hands-on experience of how to operate and set up the equipments with cautionary measures. Such as the fixing of wires, mounting of antennas and transformers, the mantling and dismantling of the antenna and the operation of the equipment.
After the setup of the equipment was done the programme concluded with a number of officials of the Soreng District Disaster Management Authority and IT having a brief hands-on training via the equipment with officials at different district stations.
