DAC Pakyong Hosts Open Marathon Promoting a Drug-Free Lifestyle
Pakyong, August 3 (IPR): The District Administration Centre Pakyong, in collaboration with Sikkim Educational Society, organised an open marathon today, under the aegis of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan as part of Nasha Mukt Sikkim. The event took place at the community hall in Pakyong.
The marathon was flagged off by Mr Agawane Rohan Ramesh, DC Pakyong, and aimed to raise awareness about substance abuse and encourage a healthy lifestyle in the community.
During the event, DC Pakyong encouraged everyone to pledge against drug use, emphasising the need to address this issue. Further, he compared the freedom felt while running the marathon to the lasting sense of freedom achievable through a drug-free life. He also commended the Sikkim Educational Society for their excellent organisation of the marathon.
Dr Satish Rasaily, Senior Psychiatrist, District Hospital Singtam, covered topics such as mental health and advised youngsters to stay focused on positive goals and the purpose of life. He also stated that, to prevent addiction, one shouldn't engage in it.
Mr Andrew Syangbo, Director of 'The Samaritan' Rehab Centre Pakyong, reiterated the importance of maintaining a positive life and staying aware of drug abuse. He encouraged seeking help from health centres and remaining enthusiastic about recovery and positive change.
Mr Subham Peter, a PhD scholar in music, performed a self-composed song on substance abuse, drawing attention to its impact and raising awareness among the audience.
Moreover, the marathon featured two categories: a 5 km run for students and an open 10 km run, both for male and female participants.
In addition, the marathon route for the 5 km run started from the Community Hall, proceeded through the main market, reached Gurung Turning, and then returned to the Community Hall for the finish.
Similarly, the 10 km run followed the same route, extending to Bancharey Dara before heading back to the Community Hall for the finish.
The winners were as follows:
Students 5 km Boys Category:
1st: Mr Ajay Bhujel
2nd: Mr Ayush Tamang
3rd: Mr Mani Kumar Chettri
Students 5 km Girls Category:
1st: Ms Lako Doma Bhutia
2nd: Ms Upashna Gurung
3rd: Ms Akansha Rai 10 km
Open Male Category:
1st: Mr Prabal Chettri
2nd: Mr Puran Rai
3rd: Mr Imran Ansari
10 km Open Female Category:
1st: Ms Chandra Kala Sharma
2nd: Ms Phur Diki Sherpa
3rd: Ms Tika Maya Gurung
Furthermore, winners received cash prizes, while the top ten contestants were awarded medals. All participants were given certificates to recognise their achievements.
