District Level World Tuberculosis Day 2025: A Call to Action for a TB-Free Region

Pakyong, March 24 (IPR): The District Level World Tuberculosis Day 2025, organised by the District Tuberculosis Centre Pakyong under District Hospital Singtam, was observed today at the Community Hall in Singtam Nagar Panchayat under the theme Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest and Deliver.

World TB Day, commemorated globally on March 24, aims to inform the public about the causes, symptoms, prevention, and treatment of tuberculosis (TB).
District Collector Pakyong, Mr Rohan Agawane, served as the chief guest at the event and underscored the essential role of early detection and effective treatment in the fight against tuberculosis, a disease that remains a significant global health challenge. He presented the TB District Action Plan 2026, which seeks to transform Pakyong District into a TB-free zone.
This initiative emphasised the importance of early disease detection, implementation of reduction strategies, promotion of the role of TB Nikshay Mitras, training for frontline workers, and comprehensive monitoring and data collection to ensure successful TB eradication in the region.
The DC highlighted the necessity of addressing the stigma associated with TB and praised the contributions of TB champions. He recommended prioritising awareness campaigns and community engagement activities to enhance public understanding of the health, social, and economic implications of tuberculosis.
Furthermore, he announced incentives for individuals and entities that significantly contribute to the creation of a TB-free region, and acknowledged outstanding Gram Panchayats (GPUs) for their efforts in fostering a TB-free society.
Chief Medical Officer Pakyong, Mr Madan Mani Dhakal reiterated the objective of eliminating tuberculosis in Pakyong District by 2025-2026. He emphasised the importance of reducing TB cases, particularly among individuals with compromised immunity, and stressed the necessity of providing adequate medication and care for high-risk groups.
District Tuberculosis Incharge, Dr Sandhya Rai, emphasised the critical need for increased awareness and eradication efforts related to tuberculosis. She noted that combating TB requires both collective action and individual participation from the community.
The event also featured a felicitation ceremony honouring the winners of the TB Mukt GPU initiative, with Rolep Lamaten GPU and Sudunglakha GPU recognized in the Silver Category, while Prem Lakha Subhaneydara GPU, Budang Kamarey GPU, and Tarpin GPU received acknowledgments in the Bronze category.
Additionally, contributions from Panchayats, lab technicians, Asha workers, and stakeholders associated with Nikshay Mitra were duly recognised.
A skit performed by Asha Workers was designed to raise awareness about TB and its preventive measures, followed by personal accounts shared by TB Champions.
The gathering was attended by the District Magistrate Superintendent, Dr Bishal Pradhan from District Hospital Singtam, along with representatives from Panchayats, healthcare officials, and staff from the District Tuberculosis Centre and District Hospital Singtam.
