Drill Debriefing: Strengthening Disaster Preparedness in Mangan District
Mangan, September 12 (IPR): Following the mock drill in Mangan District, District Magistrate-cum-Responsible Officer, Mr Anant Jain (IAS), along with Incident Commander and Incident Response Team, attended a debriefing session via video conference at the DAC conference hall, today.
The session was organised by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) in the presence of Relief Commissioner-cum-Secretary Land Revenue & Disaster Management Department Ms Namrata Thapa and was led by Maj General (Retd.), Lead Consultant NDMA Mr Sudhir Bahl.
Ms Namrata Thapa, in her address, encouraged continued learning and collaboration to strengthen disaster management, urging departments to map resources and submit plans to the government.
Maj General Bahl commended the district's efforts and emphasised the importance of preparedness, suggesting earthquake awareness in schools, the deployment of more NDRF teams and the use of drones and satellite phones for disaster mapping.
Vice Chairman SSDMA, Prof. Vinod Sharma, highlighted improvements observed over the past 12 years of disaster exercises, emphasising the need for localised, practical applications of state-level preparedness.
District Magistrate Mr Anant Jain briefed the session on key aspects of the mock drill, including:
1. Satellite Communication: Tested for disaster scenarios.
2. Logistical Support: Adequate vehicle deployment and machinery readiness.
3. Relief Camps & Staging Areas: Prepared with food and fuel supplies.
4. Active Participation: Uniformed agencies and NGOs were fully engaged.
He also identified key areas needing attention, including improved road connectivity, more medical specialists, climbing ropes and HAM radio training.
The debriefing session acknowledged progress while identifying areas for further improvement in disaster preparedness.
