Evolution of Sports Culture in Pakyong District

Pakyong, 01 August (IPR): In recent years, Pakyong District has undergone a significant transformation in the sports arena, witnessing a remarkable shift from its traditional focus on football to emerging as a versatile sporting powerhouse.
This evolution has diversified the sports landscape in the district and also paved the way for new talents and opportunities to flourish.
One of the notable developments in Pakyong District's sporting scene is the growing popularity of strength lifting, a sport that has been making waves and attracting passionate individuals eager to showcase their skills and strength. This newfound interest in strength lifting has brought forth a new wave of athletes who are making their mark both locally and on the international stage.
The recent 11th World Strength Lifting and Incline Bench Press Championship held in Kazakhstan, Osman City, showcased the talent and dedication of 15 athletes from Sikkim representing India.
Among these exceptional athletes, Ms Rikila Bhutia, a 20-year-old from Karthok, Pakyong, stood out by clinching two silver medals in the Junior Category (50 kg). Her achievements not only reflect her individual skill and hard work but also highlight the potential and promise of young athletes in the district.
Ms Bhutia, who also works as an employee at the District Administrative Centre in Pakyong, has been actively participating in various strength-lifting competitions, earning recognition as the Junior Strongest Women of Sikkim in 2023.
Similarly, another rising star from Pakyong, Mr Chewang Bhutia, aged 40, demonstrated his prowess by securing silver and bronze medals in the Seniors Men Classic Category (80 kg) at the championship. Hailing from Pachey, Pakyong, Mr Bhutia's achievements, coupled with his role as a Personal Security Officer to the District Collector Pakyong, showcase his versatility and dedication towards both his profession and passion for sports.
The district also celebrates the exceptional performance of Mr Birendra Manger, a 50-year-old athlete who impressed with his performance in the Masters category (68 kg) by clinching two gold medals at the international championship.
The District Administrative Centre Pakyong extends heartfelt congratulations to Ms Rikila Bhutia, Mr Chewang Bhutia, and Mr Birendra Manger for their exceptional achievements and contributions to their respective sports.
