French Ambassador Visits Wellness Park Meets with GMC Deputy Mayor

Mr Thierry Mathou, the Ambassador of France to India with his team were cordially welcomed to the GMC Wellness park by Ms Tshering Palden Bhutia, Deputy Mayor Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC), here at Gangtok today.
The French Ambassador was accompanied by his spouse Madam Ce'cile Mathou, Mr Didier Talpain, Consul General of France in Kolkata and Mr Samuel Bouchard Cooperation Attache' and Ms Anjita Roychaudhary Diplomatic Liaison Officer to Sikkim. The Sikkimese team included Councillors under GMC, Mr RB Bhandari Municipal Commissioner GMC; Mr Chiran Rizal Joint Commissioner GMC; Mr Dorjee Dadul, Joint Town Planner GMC, and Officials and staff of GMC.
The Ambassador in his meeting with the Deputy Mayor and the GMC officials applauded the close relationship France shares with India on international stage citing Lady Alexandra David-Néel, a renowned French explorer, spiritualist, and writer, who was the first French citizen to travel to Sikkim in 1912 and build a profound connection with Sikkim studying Buddhism.
The Ambassador proposed developing a sister city of the French village of Digne-les-Bains, which is the native home of Lady Alexandra David-Néel here in Gangtok to be preceded by a Photograph Exhibition cum Seminar on the life of Lady Alexandra David-Néel tentatively in the year 2026. The Ambassador also extended an invitation to the Deputy Mayor and her team for a visit to France, particularly to the village of Digne-les-Bains to study and understand the proposal in the near future. In his concluding remarks, he outlined sectors like cable car, wherein France could help Sikkim in terms of development and in turn Sikkim could impart its knowledge of organic farming to France.
Mr RB Bhandari Municipal Commissioner GMC, apprised the bottlenecks faced by Sikkim in its development process such as solid waste management, traffic congestion, education, water treatment plants and cable car transport facilities. He stressed on coordinated effort which can eradicate the challenges faced by the state of Sikkim.
The French Delegation's meeting with GMC officials concluded successfully, with a productive exchange of ideas. Earlier, the Welcome Speech was proposed by Mr Chiran Rizal, Joint Commissioner of GMC.
