The event, which took place today, aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of twenty trout farmers from the region in areas such as feeding management, tank hygiene, and disease control strategies in trout farming.
The team comprised of Dr Prakash Sharma, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK East Sikkim; Dr Swapna Rani, SMS Entomology; Dr Akansha, SMS Animal Science; Mrs Gouri Mukhia, AD Department of Fisheries; Mr Yogesh Dangal, BO Fisheries; Mrs Anushree Gogoi, TO Home Science, and other field guides.
During the training Dr Sharma shed light on the essential principles of feeding management, with a focus on the role of feed quality and proper feeding schedules in promoting optimal growth and health of the fish. He emphasised the potential economic benefits of trout farming in warmer regions, highlighting its low-cost nature and promising returns.
He recommended housing fish of different sizes together, emphasising the need to prevent larger fish from overconsuming and outcompeting smaller ones.
In discussing feeding practices, Dr Sharma advised adjusting feeding rates during the monsoon season to account for lesser appetite and to ensure that there is a constant supply of feed in the tanks for multiple feedings throughout the day.
He also addressed significant aspects of fish preservation, tank hygiene, and common diseases plaguing trout, providing insights into disease prevention and management strategies.
Mrs Gouri Mukhia also shared insights into the importance of proper feeding management in preventing disease outbreaks and reducing fish mortality. She highlighted various factors contributing to fish mortality in tanks and urged farmers to store feed in well-ventilated spaces during the monsoon to prevent spoilage.
Participants engaged in an interactive session where they had the opportunity to seek clarification on any doubts or queries they had.
The farmers also shared their ideas for diversifying revenue streams in aquaculture by venturing into the production of value-added products like sausages, pickles, and other processed items.
In response to the farmers' suggestions, the team assured to organise future training programmes focused on producing by-products as a means to increase revenue in aquaculture.
