KVK South Sikkim, Namthang Conducts Training and Method Demonstration for ARYA Farmers

Namchi, 28 November: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) South Sikkim, Namthang organised a daylong training and method demonstration programme for the farmers of Passi village identified under the Attracting and Retaining Youth in Agriculture (ARYA) project. ARYA, an initiative of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) launched in 2015-16, aims to motivate rural youth to take up agriculture-based entrepreneurship by equipping them with technical skills and promoting diversified income-generating activities.
Under the programme, Vermicompost and Mushroom enterprises were selected as potential livelihood avenues for the participating youth.
Theoretical sessions and hands-on demonstrations were provided to facilitate the dissemination of technologies.
Subject Matter Specialist Ms. Yangchenla Bhutia delivered a presentation on vermicompost production technology, followed by an experience-sharing session and practical demonstration by progressive farmer Shri Netra Basnet, who showcased the step-by-step process of preparing vermicompost.
Dr. Pravesh Shivakoty, Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Protection), briefed the participants on mushroom production technology. This was followed by a practical demonstration on Oyster Mushroom cultivation, led by Shri Tshering Dorjee Tamang, Farm Manager, KVK South Sikkim. Additionally, Dr. Chewang Norbu Bhutia, Subject Matter Specialist (Agricultural Extension), delivered a short talk on entrepreneurship and opportunities within agriculture for rural youth.
The programme also included an input support session during which farmers received tetra vermibeds, plastic sheets for mushroom cultivation, and mushroom spawn to support the establishment of their enterprises.
The initiative aims to empower rural youth, enhance skill development, and promote sustainable agricultural entrepreneurship in the region.
