Khamsel Ceremony Observed at Tholung Monastery

The revered Khamsel Ceremony, a sacred event observed every three years, was held from November 20th to 22nd at Ngagyur Tholung Rigzin Choedrup Ling Monastery, popularly known as Tholung Goenpa. This spiritually significant occasion involved the rare display of sacred relics and artefacts, including the holy attire of Gyalwa Lhatsun Namkha Jigme, enshrined in the monastery since 18th century. These relics are deeply revered by devotees who travel from near and far to receive blessings during this rare and auspicious event.
The ceremony was graced by the Wong, a sacred ritual led by His Eminence Tingkye Gonjang Rinpoche of Gonjang Monastery, Bhojoghari and Tulku Pema Kundal of Enchey Monastery. Their esteemed presence brought immense spiritual depth and sanctity to the occasion, drawing devotees into an atmosphere of profound reverence and devotion. The leadership of these revered spiritual figures not only elevated the ceremonial proceedings but also provided blessings and inspiration to the countless pilgrims gathered, further enriching the significance of this sacred event.
Situated in Dzongu, North Sikkim, Tholung Monastery is a revered spiritual site and a prominent centre for Buddhist practices. The walking route from Bay extends over 12 kms which covers difficult mountainous terrains and gorges. Pilgrims traveling to the monastery usually pause at Rikchen bhir. This time, lunch and refreshments were thoughtfully arranged by the Dzongu Youth Association in collaboration with Minister and Area MLA (Dzongu) Mr. Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, under the guidance of Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang (Golay). This act of hospitality reflected the community’s dedication to supporting the spiritual journey of devotees and fostering a sense of unity and service.
The Khamsel Ceremony serves as a powerful testament to faith, unity and cultural heritage, drawing devotees together in collective prayer and deep devotion. It not only strengthens spiritual bond but also upholds and celebrates the timeless traditions that define Sikkim’s rich spiritual legacy.
It may be mentioned that the ceremony was successfully conducted under the directions of Minister for Ecclesiastical Department Mr Sonam Lama, who ensured that devotees not only had the privilege of witnessing a sacred ritual but were also provided with all amenities and comfort. Dr.Passang D Phempu Secretary Ecclesiastical Department, Mr Tenzing Gelek Addl. Director Ecclesiastical Department Mr Tshering T. Bhutia Sr. Gendrung Ecclesiastical Department and officials from Ecclesiastical Department were all present and contributed significantly in conducting the holy ceremony.
Likewise, members of Tholung family, the Ngagyur Tholung Rigzin Choedrup Ling Monastery Committee and volunteers as well as all the line departments put in every effort to provide a sacred, safe and smooth experience for all. It may also be noted that this was the 701st Khamsel ceremony.
