Namchi District Hospital Observes “World Tuberculosis Day" 2025
Namchi, 24 March (IPR):
The “World Tuberculosis Day" program with the theme ‘Yes Together! We Can End TB’ for the year 2025 was observed by District Hospital Namchi at the Conference hall of Namchi District Tuberculosis Centre (DTC) building.
The World TB Day is celebrated every year on 24 March to educate the public about the impact of TB around the world.
The programme was graced by Mr Satish Chandra Rai MLA, Namchi Singithang Constituency as chief guest and Ms Anupa Tamling DC Namchi, as guest of honour.
Mr Satish Chandra Rai, MLA, addressed the gathering , expressing his appreciation for their warm welcome at the event and acknowledging their contributions to raising awareness about tuberculosis (TB).
He further remarked that "We are inviting disease ourselves by adopting unhealthy lifestyles and neglecting proper meals”. He urged the attendees to follow health guidelines and cultivate disciplined habits that promote a healthy lifestyle.
Additionally, he called for organising an awareness program aimed at benefiting both individuals and the community, with the goal of making Namchi a TB-free district.
Ms Anupa Tamling DC Namchi, in her speech, praised the DTC members for their diligent efforts in organising a successful program. She expressed her delight at the positive news about a significant number of GPUs being free of tuberculosis and encouraged the ASHA, CMO and their entire team to keep up their commendable work.
She also addressed the various forms of Tuberculosis (TB), which primarily present in two types: pulmonary TB, which impacts the lungs, and extrapulmonary TB, which affects other parts of the body such as bones, lymph nodes, or the brain.
She highlighted that many individuals remain unaware of these distinctions and advocated for implementing an awareness program. This initiative would encourage and empower people to seek TB testing.
She stated, “Let us take back the message to motivate people to get tested, as it is transferable but preventable and curable,” emphasising that this would significantly reduce the stigma faced by TB patients.
Dr Pratik Rasaily District TBO, in his address provided an overview of tuberculosis (TB) activities under the Namchi District Tuberculosis Centre for the year 2023-2024, and also shared critical information about the current TB situation which includes TB death rate, efforts to create TB-free workplaces, the status of drug-resistant TB cases, TB Preventive Therapy and the Nikshay Mitra program including the 100-day TB awareness and prevention campaign.
Further, he also talked about Nikshay Mitra scheme, which is a part of the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, which encourages individuals, NGOs, and other organisations to support tuberculosis (TB) patients by providing nutritional, diagnostic, and vocational support, aiming to improve treatment outcomes and reduce TB-related stigma.
Additionally, he stressed the need for continued community involvement in government initiatives emphasising the importance of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities to raise awareness in rural areas and schools.
Mr Gyan Pd. Pradhan, (Sr. DR-TB/HIV Coordinator), provided a comprehensive overview of the TB Free Gram Panchayat initiative launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which is a part of the government's broader mission to eliminate TB by 2025 and aims to involve over 2.5 lakh gram panchayats across India to eliminate the stigma surrounding tuberculosis and actively work towards its eradication.
Moreover, he outlined the six key indicators for identifying TB Free Gram Panchayats (GPUs). He also provided details on the selection process for TB Free GPUs, underscoring the collaborative effort needed at the grassroots level.
As part of the initiative, TB Free GPUs will be awarded certificates recognising their efforts. The certificates will be issued annually, with the following achievements:
1) 1st Year: TB Free Certificate with a bronze emblem of Mahatma Gandhi.
2) 2nd Year: Continued TB Free status with a silver emblem.
3) 3rd Year: Continued TB Free status with a gold emblem.
At the event, the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour recognised 11 GPUs, including the Panchayat President, HWA, ASHA, IPCA pharmaceutical companies, volunteers, and Nikshya Mitra, for their significant contributions in supporting tuberculosis patients and achieving a TB-free status for their GPU.
The programme also had the presence of Dr SN Adhikari CMO Namchi, Dr Pratik Rasaily, District TB Officer, Namchi, Mr Gyan Pd. Pradhan( Sr.DR-TB/HIV Coordinator), along with GUPs panchayat president, the HODs, Doctors, Consultants, hospital staff and members of HWC, Asha, Volunteers and Nikshay Mitra/Saathi.
