Revival of Barren Land Launched in Pakyong District

Pakyong, 26 July (IPR): In pursuance of the directive of Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang, a plan to revive barren lands in Pakyong District was officially launched. This strategic endeavour, with the goal of enhancing agriculture, horticulture, and animal husbandry for a prosperous future, was spearheaded by the Office of ADC (Dev) Pakyong Rural Development Department at Bengthang, Pacheykhani, today.
The proceedings commenced with customary land blessing rituals under the leadership of Ms Prabha Pradhan, Zilla Upadhayaksha.
Cattle were used to plough the fields as part of the programme, demonstrating conventional and sustainable agricultural methods.
Subsequently, millet sowing was carried out, signifying the commencement of the cultivation process on the previously unproductive land.
During the event, Mr Robin Pd Sewa, ADC (Dev), conveyed his appreciation to all participants for their involvement and backing of this initiative. He commended the Chief Minister's vision of "Golden Sikkim, Prosperous Sikkim."
In accordance with this vision, he announced that every Friday of each month, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., would be designated as "Field Day."
On this designated day, all government personnel from various offices (including all BACs, all GPUs, and all Sub-Division Offices) falling under the purview of the Office of the ADC (Dev) Pakyong Rural Development Department will partake in cultivating the unproductive land of their respective offices to cultivate seasonal crops in consultation with the Agriculture & Horticulture Department of Pakyong District.
He also underscored that this initiative is a stride towards promoting organic farming in the region, aligning with the Chief Minister's directive.
He urged individuals to make use of their unproductive lands and not let them lie fallow, underscoring the significance of revitalising these lands for agricultural purposes.
Ms Prabha Pradhan, Zilla Upadhayaksha, encouraged active participation in this initiative, expressing gratitude to the Chief Minister for his forward-thinking approach towards "Golden Sikkim, Prosperous Sikkim."
She stressed that this vision guides the people of Sikkim to revive and cultivate their unproductive lands. She added that the initiative launched today in Pakyong District is a notable stride towards realising this vision.
She also reiterated, "Work is worship," urging individuals to embrace all forms of labour without hesitation and contribute to organic farming for the state's progress. She also shed light on the Chief Minister's programme, "My Tree, My Offspring," emphasising the importance of sustainable and organic farming practices.
In attendance during the day were Dr Anjala Pradhan, Additional Director AH&VS; Mr Tshering Chopel Bhutia, Additional Director, Agriculture Department; Dr Prerna Baraily, Deputy Director AH&VS; Mr CS Limboo, BDO Pakyong; Panchayats; MGNREGA staff; and members of the public.
Similarly, in Rangpo, Field Day was observed, with all government personnel from various offices (including all BACs, all GPUs, and all sub-division offices) actively engaging in cultivating unproductive land. This exemplified the collective effort across the district to rejuvenate unused lands.
