Safer Internet Day Celebrated With a Move Towards Better Internet
Gangtok, February 11 (IPR):
The Safer Internet Day was commemorated today at the National Informatics Centre, Sikkim State Centre. The theme for this year’s observance was "Together for a Better Internet."
The event was marked by a comprehensive workshop attended by Mr Tenzing T Kaleon, Secretary of Information Technology and Dr LP Sharma, State Informatics Officer. Senior Directors and officials from the National Informatics Centre (NIC) Sikkim also participated in the programme, which included virtual participation from representatives of various government departments and students from numerous schools across Sikkim.
Mr Ravindra Telang, Chief Secretary, expressed his enthusiasm during a virtual address regarding the organisation of a workshop focused on internet safety. He emphasised the necessity of such initiatives in today’s digitised world, particularly in light of the alarming increase in cyber fraud. Highlighting the importance of vigilance, he urged everyone to be proactive in avoiding potential scams. Mr Telang encouraged responsible use of online services and called for robust protection measures for data centers and networking devices through effective cybersecurity practices. He asked all Heads of Departments to collaborate with the NIC and IT Departments to ensure that all data stored in these centers remain secure and free from vulnerabilities. In conclusion, he directed everyone involved to take steps toward creating a safer online environment.
Mr Tenzing T Kaleon, in his address emphsised the creation of a safe and secure online environment, calling it a collective responsibility to ensure it remains a positive and empowering tool for everyone. This year’s theme serves as a necessary reminder to be vigilant and cautious while navigating the internet. He seeked awareness among individuals on the potential internet threats and urged the society as a whole to come together and promote digital literacy, online safety, and responsible internet useage. He also spoke on the use of empathy, respect and kindness online. The state govermnet is committed to implementing initiatives on digital literacy, online safety campaigns and collaberations with stakeholders to create a safer online environment. He urged all citizens to join this endeavour and make a conscious effort towards a prticing safe and conscious internet useage.
Earlier in his opening remarks, Dr LP Sharma welcomed everyone to the programme, he noted that today our life is fully based on internet in this digital era, but with this digital transformation comes its negativities, where people have become vulnerable to hacking, blackmail and digital theft. The Safer Internet Day, is celebrated all over the world and this year with the rise in digital malicious activity, the Governmet of India had directed all NICs to conduct workshops to bring awareness on the ills of internet and safeguard the interest of the people.He informed that along with the head office, the four district offices are also hosting seperate workshops targeting the citizens at the grassroot levels. He also highlighted the help of All India Radio and Information and Public Relations Department in dessiminating the important information.
The programme included various presentations where:
Ms Roshni Chamling, Cloud Admin NIC Sikkim, presented on the Basics of Internet- Uses and possible threats, topics such as Phishing, Fake Ids, Vishing and Smishing were discussed.
Mr Ravi K Sharma, Lead Admin, NIC Sikkim spoke on trending cyber security threats including AI Powered Scams, Investment scams, etc.
A presentation on Cyber security and fraud was made by Mr Abishek Dahal, PI Incharge, Cyber Crime CID and Mr Thinley Zangpo Bhutia, Programmer Cyber Crime, on the topic of Cyber Fraud where helpline 1930 was shared for effective assistance. Mr Thinley also shared www.ceir.gov.in site for assistance in case someone lose their phone. They concluded by saying that the best way to prevent a cyber crime was to stay vigilant and alert.
Mr Ranjit Chamling, HoD of Cyber Security at NIC Sikkim, in his closing remarks emphasised the global celebration of this day for the past two decades. He stressed the importance of setting boundaries around cyber usage, noting that digital footprints can be exploited. He also highlighted the mental health hazards associated with excessive mobile phone use while acknowledging that the internet has made life easier. Additionally, he mentioned the significant rise in cyber fraud and attacks in India over the past five years. He concluded by stating that vigilance in today’s digital world is essential.
The floor was then opened for discussion and the session concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms Kalzang Ongmu Bhutia, Joint Director (IT), NIC Sikkim.
