Sikkim Highlights Key Issues at NEC’s 72nd Plenary Meeting
Agartala, December 21 (IPR): The 72nd Plenary Meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) was held today under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Mr Amit Shah. Representing Sikkim was the Governor, Mr Om Prakash Mathur, Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang-Golay , Chief Secretary, Secretary Chief Minister's Office and Secretary Department of Personnel.
Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang highlighted critical concerns and proposed initiatives aimed at advancing regional development and collaboration in his address.
Expressing gratitude for the Union Budget 2024-25 and the support from the Home Minister, the Chief Minister emphasized the collective vision of Viksit Bharat-2047.
He also highlighted the importance of tourism and MSMEs as pivotal sectors for the state’s economy, urging the Central Government to strengthen tourism infrastructure and promote entrepreneurship through a proposed NEC pilot project.
Key proposals in the Chief Minister’s address included the reopening of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route via Sikkim and the establishment of a Multimodal Corridor with an Integrated Check Post at Chiwa Bhanjyang, on the Nepal border. These measures, it was stressed, would enhance connectivity, facilitate trade, and bolster regional ties. He also highlighted the success of eco-tourism projects in Sikkim, underscoring the potential for replicating such initiatives across the North Eastern region.
Urgent issues such as the disruptions along NH10 caused by the recent Teesta floods and delays in the railway project were raised, with calls for immediate action to restore connectivity and mitigate economic losses, were also presented. Additionally, the need for all-weather operations at Pakyong Airport was stressed, alongside structural improvements to ensure reliable flight services.
Acknowledging the transformative impact of the UNNATI Scheme 2024, the Chief Minister praised its focus on youth employment and skill development. It also announced plans to commemorate Sikkim’s 50th Statehood Anniversary on May 16, 2025, celebrating five decades of progress and integration into the Indian Union.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister extended heartfelt thanks to the Union Home Minister Mr Amit Shah, NEC officials, and Central and State representatives for their visionary leadership and collaboration. He also expressed a note of appreciation to the Government of Tripura for its hospitality and the seamless organisation of this landmark meeting.
