The First Sikkim Forest Sports Meet “Sports for Camaraderie” Announced

A press conference regarding the First Sikkim Forest Sports Meet was held at the Tragopan Meeting Room at the Forest Secretariat, this afternoon.
The Forest and Environment Department is celebrating 50 Years of Statehood by organising the First Sikkim Forest Sports Meet which is scheduled to take place from April 18 to April 20, 2025. The theme of the event is “Sports for Camaraderie.”
Addressing the press, Minister for Forest & Environment, Mines & Geology, and Science & Technology Departments, Mr Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, highlighted the significance of the upcoming sports meet. He explained that the event aims to unite employees from all six districts of the Forest Department, and will be an opportunity to foster camaraderie and bridge communication gaps.
Mr Lepcha emphasised the significance of fitness in today's world. Noting the overwhelming response, he mentioned that around 700 employees from all districts offices have applied to participate in the events, exceeding expectations. He stated that the Department will now send more deserving participants to the All India Forest Meet, capitalising on the unprecedented enthusiasm, which marks a significant increase from previous participation levels.
Mr Lepcha also detailed from an environmental standpoint as to how the event will incorporate eco-friendly practices, including post-event clean-up missions and measures to reduce congestion, such as pooled bus services for participants.
Speaking to the Media, PCCF cum Principal Secretary of Forest & Environment Department Mr Pradeep Kumar, spoke about the theme of the event stating that “Sports for Camaraderie” will ensure inter-departmental harmony and will demonstrate to the public how large gatherings can be organised sustainably, minimising environmental impact and reducing carbon footprint.
Director Mr Suresh Thatal, who is also the Nodal Officer for the Forest Sports Meet, elaborated on the importance of physical fitness, highlighting its direct impact on work performance and overall well-being. He also stated that the Event intends to promote Mission LiFE – Lifestyle for Environment and campaigns for SUP (Single Use Plastic) free events, less use plastics, avoiding packaged food, promoting clean and green Sikkim. In addition, a Green Audit Team will document the event's environmental impact, showcasing pre-event and post-event sustainability efforts to demonstrate that large events can minimise their carbon footprint. Additionally, eco-friendly e-invitations were sent to chief guests and dignitaries, aligning with the event's green values.
Mr Thatal noted that the event is a collaborative effort with the Sports & Youth Affairs Department and the Badminton Association of Sikkim. Selections took place from April 11-13, 2025 with semi-finals and finals scheduled for April 18-20, 2025. Events will include football, athletics, badminton, table tennis, carrom, chess, and fun races, among others, with over 25 competitions in total.
