The two-day capacity-building workshop concludes at Manan Kendra
Gangtok, November 29 (IPR): The second day of the two-day capacity-building workshop on "Building Resilient Communities: Women and Sustainable Ecosystems in NER" organised by Sikkim State Commission for Women (SSCW) in collaboration with the National Commission for Women, concluded at the Mini Hall, Manan Kendra, today.
In attendance were Ms Yousa Lachenpa, Member Secretary SSCW, Ms Rupa Manger, Member SSCW, Resource Persons namely, Ms Kessang Yanki, Additional Registrar Corporation Department; Ms Sushmita Tamang, Deputy Director Agriculture Department; Mr Vivek Sharma, Range Officer, Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) Forest Department; Dr Tshering Lhamu Bhutia, Sr Scientist Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR); Dr Tshering Gyalpo, Deputy General Manager Sikkim Milk Union Ltd.; Ms Meena Rai, Dairy Farmer and Milk Person of the Year 2023, Suntaley, Pakyong District; Ms Chanda Tamang, Member SSCW, officials from Forest Department, Inspectors of various departments, members of SHGs, NGOs, and Aganwadi workers.
In her welcome address, Ms Chanda Tamang welcomed the attendees to the workshop. She expressed hope that the workshop would empower women to seize the opportunities presented and make the most of the knowledge shared. Ms Tamang also extended her gratitude to all the resource persons for their insightful presentations, recognising their valuable contributions in fostering a deeper understanding of the topics discussed. She emphasised the importance of such workshops in creating a platform for learning, growth, and empowerment for women in the region.
In his presentation on the role of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) as a source of sustainable livelihood, Mr Vivek Sharma elaborated on the importance of NTFPs and highlighted their impact on local livelihoods and the opportunities they provide.
Ms Kessang Yanki highlighted the pivotal role of cooperative societies in empowering rural women in her presentation. She also discussed various income-generating opportunities provided by these societies, emphasising their potential to enhance financial independence and community development.
Ms Sushmita Tamang presented in the topic of 'Women in agriculture sector vis-à-vis Government initiatives for women farmers' wherein she discussed the significant role women play in agriculture in Sikkim and shed light on the challenges in the sector. Additionally, she elaborated on various government initiatives aimed at supporting women farmers and highlighted the contributions of the Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) in empowering them.
Dr. Tshering Lhamu Bhutia presented her address on 'Role of ICAR in improving livelihood in farming sector', in which she elaborated on the vital role played by ICAR in promoting agricultural development and enhancing farmers livelihood. Dr Bhutia also highlighted the centre’s ongoing projects, focusing on their contribution to innovation, sustainability, and rural development.
Dr Tshering Gyalpo spoke on the 'Role of Women in dairy farming in Sikkim and empowering women in dairy farming' highlighting the contributions of women in dairy farming in Sikkim, emphasising their central role in maintaining sustainable agricultural practices, and improving the local economy. Dr Gyalpo underscored the importance of empowering dairy farmers through training, access to resources, and supportive policies.
Ms Meena Rai shared her journey in dairy production and management. She discussed the various challenges she encountered as a woman in the dairy industry and offered insights into her experiences, highlighting the perseverance and determination required to succeed in this field.
During the workshop the resource persons were felicitated by Ms Rupa Manger, Member SSCW.
