Gangtok, July 18
Urban Development Department, Government of Sikkim received the Performance Recognition for Access to Financial Inclusion and Street Vendors Empowerment (PRAISE-2023-24) Award for outstanding performance under PMSVANidhi. The State was awarded the second prize in the category of Best Performing States (Loan Performance) among the Hilly and North Eastern States; the first prize was bagged by Assam. The Award ceremony was held at the Habitat Centre, New Delhi.
Shri Manohar Lall Khattar, Hon’ble Union Ministry for Ministry of Urban and Housing Affairs (MOHUA), Government of India handed the Award to Shri M.T. Sherpa, Secretary, Urban Development Department (UDD), who was accompanied by Shri Jigme Wangchuk Bhutia, State Mission Director, DAY- National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) and Shri Tempo Tashi Bhutia, Municipal Executive Officer, Mangan Nagar Panchayat .
Also present on the occasion were Shri Tokhan Sahu, Hon’ble Minister of State, MOHUA, Shri Anurag Jain, Secretary, MOHUA and representatives from the Ministry and other States/UTs.
PM Street Vendors’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PMSVANidhi) Scheme is a special micro credit lending scheme for streeendors which offers collateral free loan of Rs. 10,000/- of one year tenure to them. The loans are provided by the banks to eligible vendors in coordination with the urban local bodies.
Sikkim had been given an initial target of 700 beneficiaries by the Ministry, which was later increased to 910 beneficiaries to be achieved by March, 2024. As on date, a total of 1150 such loans have been disbursed across the seven urban local bodies in the State, thus exceeding the Ministry’s target by a long way. Further, another impressive achievement for Sikkim is that a total of 724 Street Vendors are digitally active and they have conducted 2.43 lakh digital transactions worth over Rs. 26 crores till date. The award is the recognition by Government of India of sincere efforts made by the State Government under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, P.S. Tamang through Urban Development Department, ULBs and Banks to reach scheme to the last mile.
