A two-day inspiring training cum workshop on UNESCO Global Geoparks" was held in UNESCO House, Chanakayapuri, New Delhi, marking the first event of its kind in India.
The workshop featured various presentations, panel discussions, and video screenings, providing a comprehensive overview of the UNESCO Global Geoparks. Secretary, Ministry of Mines Shri. V. L Kantha Rao emphasised on recognition of at least two Geo- Parks in next three years in India. Geo- Parks concept is much more porous and prioritises community participation, Cultural, educational and Geo-tourism. Geological Survey of India selected six sites for proposed Geo- parks in first phase which has also included the stromatolite fossil Park at Mamley, under Namchi District, Sikkim.
On the 1st day of the interactive workshop Geo- Scientists from Brazil,Portugal ,Romania , Ireland,Japan, Iran ,Latin America,Germany, shared their Journey to recognition of their respective Geo parks by UNESCO through PPT. Further, dignitaries from UNESCO, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Mines enlightened the process and support required for various Geo parks to be taken from the map of India to the world Map.
On the 2nd day of the interactive workshop two technical sessions were conducted and final Panel Discussion on ‘How to create a successful Geoparks?’ was held.
In this regard an official meeting with the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim with officials from Mines and Geology Department led by Hon'ble Minister,Mines & Geology Mr Pintso Namgyal Lepcha & Secretary,DMG, Mrs. Dicky Yangzom was held on 19th Sept 2024 with special focus on the stromatolite fossil park at Mamley under Namchi District. The Department is striving to work on the same line on bringing the Mamley stromatolite fossil park to the world map by UNESCO recognition in coordination with other Departments and stakeholders. Two senior Officers from the Department of Mines & Geology shri. Keshar Kumar Luitel, Additional Director and Shri. Tikendra Hari Sharma , Senior Geologist attended the said programme at New Delhi organised by UNESCO and Geological Survey of India under Ministry of Mines.
