A Three Day Hands-on Workshop on Sustainable Lifestyle Skilling on SUP Alternatives held at Gangtok
A three-day hands-on workshop on "Sustainable Lifestyle - Skilling on SUP (Single-Use Plastics) Alternatives" was held on the 7th, 8th, and 9th of October 2024, under the "Environment Education Programme" initiative. Organized by the Forest and Environment Department, Government of Sikkim, and supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, the workshop aimed to promote sustainable practices by offering practical solutions to single-use plastic.
The workshop was participated by 150 students and teachers from 30 schools of Mangan, Pakyong and Gangtok Districts at Sidekeong Tulku Forest Conference Hall, Deoarli, Gangtok.
The workshop with fun learning hands-on activity focused on zero waste initiatives to promote circular economy. Activities included skilling on upcycling of plastic and other forms of wastes into usable creatives, making of decorative and usable arts from locally available natural resources in line with objectives of Mission LiFE - Lifestyle for Environment. The resource person for the workshop were from Sikkim Blossoms, a voluntary organization based in Gangtok and officers from State ENVIS/ EEP cell of the department. The students and teachers participated the event with great zeal and best school teams were also rewarded with hand-made bamboo crafts as prizes. The workshop emphasized practical, eco-friendly solutions that can be integrated into daily life, thereby encouraging participants to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. Quiz competitions were also held at the end focusing on “Environment Education Programme (EEP)" with prizes to the winners. The workshop also had the presence of Chief Conservator of Forest Karma D. Legshey, Joint Director Kusum Gurung, Sr Programme Officer Rajen Pradhan and Information Officer Laxuman Darnal as other key speakers.
