Gangtok, Sikkim: As part of the 9th Ayurveda Day Celebration 2024, the Regional Ayurveda Research Institute (RARI), Gangtok, organized a vibrant and informative event for high school and higher secondary students at Government Senior Secondary School, Tadong, Gangtok, Sikkim, on 24th October 2024.
The event attracted a large turnout, with 125 students actively participating in various activities aimed at promoting Ayurvedic principles for holistic health.
The event commenced with an Awareness Lecture delivered by Dr. Shreelakshmi R.S., Research Officer (Ayurveda), on the topic "Healthy Lifestyle from an Ayurvedic Perspective." During the session, Dr. Shreelakshmi highlighted the significance of leading a balanced life through Ayurvedic practices, focusing on daily routines (Dinacharya), seasonal regimens (Ritucharya), and the importance of a healthy diet. The students were encouraged to adopt Ayurveda's timeless wisdom to improve their physical and mental well-being and prevent lifestyle-related diseases.
Following the lecture, a Poster Competition on the theme "Role of Ayurveda for Global Health" occurred. The competition showcased the artistic talents of the students as they creatively depicted how Ayurveda, with its holistic approach to health, can play a vital role in addressing global health challenges, from preventive healthcare to mental wellness and chronic disease management.
An Essay Competition on the topic "Good Dietary Practices in Maintaining Health" was also conducted. The students noted the critical role a balanced and nutritious diet plays in maintaining good health, highlighting Ayurvedic dietary recommendations that focus on wholesome, natural foods tailored to individual body types (Prakriti).
The day's activities concluded with a Yoga Camp, where the Common Yoga Protocol was demonstrated by Dr. Animesh Sen, Research Assistant (Botany), and Miss Sunita Maity, with guidance provided by Dr. Shreelakshmi R.S. The students were taught simple yoga postures and breathing techniques designed to improve flexibility, strength, and mental clarity. The yoga session reinforced the connection between body, mind, and breath, emphasizing the importance of regular yoga practice in maintaining health and reducing stress.
The entire program was a step towards encouraging young minds to embrace Ayurveda and yoga as effective tools for holistic health. The Regional Ayurveda Research Institute, Gangtok, remains committed to promoting Ayurveda's relevance in modern life, especially among the youth.
