The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH & VS) Department has successfully concluded a transformative 16-day training programme for “Pashusakhis,” marking a significant milestone in Sikkim's Animal Husbandry development.
This pioneering initiative was conducted in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board, (NDDB) which aims to revolutionize the state's Animal Husbandry sector by creating a robust network of certified Accredited agent for health and extension of livestock production ( A- Help).
Twenty-five dedicated Pashusakhis from the Sikkim Rural Livelihoods Mission (SRLM) participated in this comprehensive training program at the Sokeythang Training Centre, of Tadong Gangtok. The curriculum featured an innovative blend of orientation sessions, practical demonstrations and hands-on experience in crucial areas like;
- Advanced animal handling techniques
- Modern housing practices and ration balancing
- Essential first aid procedures
- Sustainable livestock management practices
To enhance practical understanding, participants engaged in educational field visits to various prestigious facilities across Sikkim, including:
- Mamring Gaushala
- Singhari Goat Conservation Farm
- Sikkim Milk Union
- State Veterinary Polyclinic
- State Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (SADDL)
- Mobile Veterinary Unit Call Centre etc.
The program, which ran from December 3rd to December 18th, 2024, culminated in a prestigious valedictory ceremony on December 19th. The event was graced by distinguished officials including Dr. Anand Thapa, Principal Director (VS), along with Directors of AH, Director Training & Extension cell /C&D, Additional Directors, Joint Directors and senior officials from both the Animal Husbandry Department and SRLM Sikkim.
This initiative represents a significant step forward in bridging the gap between veterinary services and our farming communities, stated Dr. Anand Thapa, Principal Director (VS). By empowering Pashusakhis with comprehensive training, the Department is creating a sustainable model for livestock healthcare and management across Sikkim.
The program's strategic focus on creating certified A-HELPs addresses a critical need in Sikkim's Animal Husbandry sector, establishing a vital link between veterinary officers and livestock farmers. This network of trained professionals is expected to significantly improve animal health outcomes and promote sustainable farming practices throughout the state.
