Celebrating 50 years of statehood :
A one day programme on “geological awareness at block level” was organised by the Department of Mines and Geology,Govt of Sikkim at Parakha Block Administrative Centre under Pakyong District on 9th January, 2025.
Geological awareness is an important issue for the public at the village level and it was well received by the public of the area who were keen to participate.
The Panchayat Presidents of Linkey Parakha GPU Mrs Chandra Kala Sharma,Rewa Machong GPU Shri Manoj Rai,Latuk Barapathing Mrs Sangita Ruchal attended the programme.
Shri. Kewal Sharma, Block Development Officer, BAC was the Chief Guest of the occasion at BAC Parakha. Also present in the programme were Deputy Director (Education) Shri. G.R. Kafley, Assitant Director ( Panchayati Raj) Shri. Milan Pradhan, Assistant Engineer Shri. Akash Deep Rai.
A brief keynote address on the importance of the geological awareness programme was given by Mrs. Prakriti Pradhan, Senior Geologist, DMG who also explained the online stability reporting system launched by the HCM on 19th September 2024 and explained the importance.
The programme featured a presentation on landslide awareness by Senior Geologist Mrs. Indira Sharma, DMG. A presentation on site suitability for construction in hilly terrain was presented by Senior Geologist Shri. Tikendra Hari Sharma, DMG.
The programme was a highly interactive one during which the Chief guest, Engineers, Panchayats and the public actively participated with various queries.
The aim of the Government through such programmes is to bring about awareness among the public at the local level especially in rural areas about geological hazards and how to minimise risks.
Such programmes will be conducted in 16 blocks across the state as a part of the ongoing celebrations of 50 glorious years of statehood this year.
