Gangtok, January 16, 2025:
The District Administrative Centre, Gangtok, in collaboration with the Department of CSR, Sun Pharma Laboratories Limited, Sikkim, and implemented by Stars of Hope, successfully conducted the second series of Sun Talks at the auditorium hall of STNM Hospital, today.
The program had the presence of Shri Tushar G. Nikhare (IAS), DM Gangtok, Shri Tenzing Loden Lepcha (IPS), Sr. SP Gangtok, Shri G.L. Meena (IAS), SDM (HQ) Gangtok, Shri D.D. Sharma, Director, Skill Development Department; and Shri Nirmal Chaudhary from MSME. Also present were Shri Wasif Ali, Head CSR, Corporate Relations & IRA Sun Pharma Sikkim, and Shri Bikas Thapa, Stars of Hope NGO.
The second series focused on the theme “Mental Health and Resilience: A Way Forward for Protecting Youth from Drug and Substance Abuse.”
Speaking on the occasion Shri Tushar G. Nikhare highlighted the central theme of the discussion, shedding light on the crucial roles and responsibilities of rehabilitation homes in safeguarding mental health. He also emphasised the need to channel the energy of youth toward positive change and betterment of the society,
Shri Tenzing Loden Lepcha discussed various types of substances and their abuse, as well as the demand and supply side of drugs in the state. He further discussed the need for collaboration among civil society, the administration, and the police to combat this issue.
Earlier, Shri G.L. Meena, SDM(HQ)-Gangtok delivered the welcome address and shared insights on the importance of mental health and the role of administration and civil society in fostering mental health and resilience in society. He also underscored the significance of the Sun Talks initiative.
The session featured distinguished speakers who brought valuable insights to the forefront:
• Dr. Sonam Lasopa, Senior Clinical Psychologist, Department of Psychiatry, STNM Hospital, delivered an insightful talk on substance dependence, focusing on recovery strategies and relapse prevention. Addressing an audience that included rehabilitation inmates, she emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to treatment, incorporating psychological support, community involvement, and consistent monitoring to help individuals overcome dependence and maintain long-term recovery.
• Shri K.C. Nima, Founder, of Freedom Facility, and a recovered addict, spoke about the role and importance of rehabilitation centres in addressing addiction.
• Mrs Rinzing Bhutia, in charge, of Nivasa Female Rehabilitation Centre, and a recovered addict, shared her powerful personal journey, offering hope and practical advice to those struggling with addiction.
• Shri Primus Bhutia, an athlete, motivational speaker, and recovered drug addict, highlighted the importance of utilizing the youth’s time effectively and staying away from addiction.
The MSME Gangtok branch and the Skill Development Department presented an overview of the eligibility criteria and benefits of their respective schemes, encouraging the audience to register for various initiatives.
Documentaries related to healthcare interventions by Sun Pharma at STNM Hospital were screened and appreciated by the guests.
The program concluded with the felicitation of speakers and dignitaries by the District Collector, Gangtok, Shri Tushar Nikhare.
