Four days workshop for school health and wellness Ambassadors for implementing life skills curriculum in schools under health and wellness program under Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram in collaboration with Sikkim Inspires started from today at Thapsang Restaurant Hall, Mangan.
This workshop is being organized by District hospital Mangan in coordination with Education department Mangan.The programme had the presence of Mr David Gyamtso Lingdong Chief Education officer as the Chief Guest along with Dr Tempo T Kaleon CMO North and Mr Karma Tshering Bhutia JD Education.Also present were Dr Tshering Zomba Lachenpa DRCHO Mangan,Mrs Paden Bhutia Sr DPHNO,Mr Rinchen Namgyal Bhutia HEO,Mrs Diki Lepcha IE coordinator.
The resource persons are Dr Tenzing Chewang Lepcha Sr Dental Surgeon,Ms Lhasey Lepcha school Health Coordinator,Ms Sangmoo Lepcha GT Arts Heegyathang SSS,Ms Tshering Laden Bhutia GT science Mangshilla SSS,Ms Pema Ongmoo Bhutia PGT Bio Phodong SSS.
SHWP is a flagship program of GOI to strengthen comprehensive primary health care in India under Ayushman Bharatlaunched on April 14 2018 by Hon'ble Prime Minister.
SHWP is a joint initiative of Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education.It has been implemented to ensure physical as well as mental well-being of school going students.
This workshop will train the teachers on Life Skills mainly focussing on 11 thematic areas like 1.Growing up healthy.2 Emotional and Mental well-being.3.interpersonal relationships.4 values and citizenship. 5 gender equality.6 Nutrition Health and sanitation. 7 prevention and management of Substance Misuse. 8 Promotion of Healthy lifestyle. 9 Reproductive Health and HIV prevention. 10 Safety and security against Violence and injuries.11 promotion of safe use of internet and social media behaviours.
After the completion of the workshop they will serve as Health and Wellness Ambassadors in their respective schools and conduct one hour classroom Sessions every Tuesdays.They will also identify 2 health and wellness Messengers to support them in organizing school activities and also installation of question box in each class to resolve individual anonymous queries of students.
Dr Tshering Zomba Lachenpa presented the overview of school health and wellness program and highlighted the Adolescent health fact sheets for sikkim.The rising cases of Anaemia ,Non communicable diseases like Hypertension,Diabetes ,CKD amongst Adolescents.Also the increase in Teenage pregnancy leading to health risks like complications during pregnancy and child birth thereby increasing maternal and infant deaths and also early marriages causing drop out from schools.All these figures of health related conditions of Sikkim are more than the National figure which is very alarming.This is due to sedentary lifestyle,poor dietary habits ,smoking , tobacco consumption and alcohol misuse which is very high in adolescents.This behaviour and lifestyle needs to be changed.
She also informed the participants about the need for reporting in the SHWP app after each session which will be monitored in the district,state and national level.
CEO Mr David Gyamtso Lingdong encouraged the participants to take the training seriously and then to implement the program effectively in their schools to achieve positive outcome in students.
Dr Tempo Tsewang Kaleon CMO stressed on the importance of this program to promote the overall health and well-being of the students where Teachers play a vital role in shaping the students future and also addressing the mental health issues amongst the students.
A total of 38 participants from 19 schools participated in this 4 days workshop.
