The second day of the Fish Exhibition-Cum-sale was marked by significant milestones in strengthening the fisheries sector in Sikkim.
The event witnessed the esteemed presence of Hon’ble Minister Shri Purna Kumar Gurung as the Chief Guest, along with Shri N.B. Pradhan, Advisor, Fisheries Department, as the Guest of Honour. Also present on the occasion were the Mayor, Councillors, Secretary of the Urban Development Department, Secretary of Fisheries, Director of Fisheries, Additional Director, and officials of the Fisheries Department.
A key highlight of the day was the inauguration of the revamped Domestic Fish Market, aimed at providing a modern, hygienic, and well-equipped marketplace for fish vendors and consumers. This initiative, spearheaded by the Fisheries Department, is expected to significantly enhance market accessibility, ensure food safety, and boost the sale of locally sourced fish.
Additionally, in a major step towards strengthening fish marketing and distribution, the Hon’ble Minister flagged off four Moter Cycles equipped with ice boxes. This initiative will facilitate the efficient transportation and sale of fresh fish, ensuring quality and accessibility for consumers across different areas. By providing fish vendors with better mobility and storage solutions, the Fisheries Department aims to expand market linkages and enhance the livelihoods of local fish farmers.
In recognition of exceptional contributions to fish marketing, the Fisheries Department felicitated Tashi Delek for its outstanding support and commitment to promoting the sale of fish products following the successful celebration of the Fish Festival, held from 17th to 24th November 2024.
The Fisheries Department, Government of Sikkim, extends its sincere gratitude to all dignitaries, participants, and stakeholders for their valuable support in making this event a grand success. With continuous efforts towards strengthening the fisheries sector, the department remains committed to empowering fish farmers, promoting sustainable aquaculture, and enhancing fish marketing avenues across the state.
