Report on the Orientation Program for First-Year Students and Elocution Competition at Sikkim Government Law College
The Legal Literacy Club of Sikkim Government Law College organized an enriching and informative "Orientation Program for First-Year Students and Elocution Competition" on March 26, 2025, at the Moot Court Hall. This initiative was aimed at introducing the first-year students to the concept of Legal Aid and its significance in the legal system, ensuring that they gain awareness about its working mechanisms and societal impact.
The event was honored by the esteemed presence of the Hon'ble Member Secretary of Sikkim Legal Services Authority (SLSA), Madam Samita Sharma, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Also present were the respected Principal of the College, Dr. Tshewang Dorjee Lama, and Dr. Dilip Pandey, the Dean of Students' Affairs.
The program began with the formal felicitation of the Hon'ble Chief Guest, Madam Samita Sharma, by Ms. Tshering Choden Bhutia, Assistant Professor at the College. This gesture was a symbol of gratitude towards the Chief Guest for taking the time to attend and contribute to the event.
Following the felicitation, Dr. Dilip Pandey, the Dean of Students' Affairs, delivered an introductory lecture aimed at providing the first-year students with a deep understanding of Legal Literacy. His lecture focused on the importance of legal aid in society, highlighting its role in ensuring access to justice for all and bridging the gap between the legal system and the marginalized sections of society.
The Principal, Dr. Tshewang Dorjee Lama, also addressed the gathering, sharing his profound insights on legal education and the importance of legal awareness. His speech was not only motivational but also filled with wisdom, encouraging the first-year students to fully engage with the learning process and embrace the opportunities that come with studying law.
After the informative speeches, the event moved to its next segment – the much-anticipated Elocution Competition. The competition saw enthusiastic participation from students across various semesters, showcasing their oratory skills and depth of knowledge on legal topics. The competition was judged by a distinguished panel of judges, consisting of Ms. Palmu Kaleon, Assistant Professor, and Dr. Binita Pradhan, Assistant Professor.
One of the most memorable highlights of the event was the skit presented by the eighth-semester students, which focused on an important legal matter that requires widespread public awareness.
The presence of the Hon'ble Chief Guest, Madam Samita Sharma, was already an inspiring factor for the students. However, her speech further elevated the program, as she passionately spoke about the importance of Legal Aid and its impact on society.
The winners of the competition were as follows:
● 1st Position: Jormit Lepcha (VIII Semester)
● 2nd Position: Chunki Bhutia (VI Semester)
● 3rd Position: Isneha Tamang (VIII Semester)
Finally, the program concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Dr. Sonam Diki Dolma Bhutia, Assistant Professor, who expressed gratitude to all the guests, participants, and attendees for their contributions to making the event a success.
The event helped build a sense of community and camaraderie among the first-year students while simultaneously promoting a spirit of academic excellence and social responsibility.
