Gangtok, March 31 (IPR): The 16th State Athletics Meet, organised by the Sikkim Athletics Association and sponsored by Sun Pharmaceuticals Sikkim, concluded today at Khel Gaon, Resithang, with Gangtok District claiming the overall championship title.
This prestigious inter-district competition saw participation from approximately 300 athletes representing all districts of Sikkim. Throughout the event, competitors demonstrated remarkable athleticism, determination, and sportsmanship across a wide array of track and field events, including sprints, middle-distance and long-distance races, jumps, and throws.
The final day of the competition featured several outstanding performances, particularly in the 4x100m relay events, where Gangtok District excelled in the men's category.
With consistently strong results across multiple disciplines, Gangtok District emerged as the overall champion, securing the highest points total. Namchi District attained the runner-up position, while Gyalsing District finished in third place.
The Most promising athlete was presented to Ms Soniya Subba, Mangan District.
The Best Athlete Awards were presented as follows:
- Under-14 Boys: Mr Prayash Pradhan, Gangtok District
- Under-14 Girls: Ms Roshna Sunar, Namchi District
- Under-16 Boys: Mr Sandesh Kami, Soreng District
- Under-16 Girls: Ms Sohenne Limbo, Gyalsing District
- Under-18 Boys: Mr Phurba Hissey Sherpa, Namchi District
- Under-18 Girls: Ms Awandhika Tamang, Gyalsing District
The closing ceremony was attended by Mr Anil Raj Rai, Secretary Food and Civil Supplies Department along with esteemed dignitaries from the Sikkim Athletics Association and District Associations.
The successful conclusion of the 16th State Athletics Meet signifies a significant milestone in the promotion of athletics within the state.
