Namchi, 31.03.2025 : The Angling Competition-cum-Awareness Program on Responsible Angling was successfully organised at River Rangit, Baguwa, Namchi District, combining environmental conservation with crucial social welfare initiatives. The event was graced by Hon'ble Minister for Urban Development Shri Bhoj Raj Rai as Chief Guest and Hon'ble Minister for Agriculture Shri Puran Kumar Gurung as Guest of Honour, who commended the innovative integration of angling awareness with social welfare programs.
The Social Welfare Department's participation was led by Shri Satyen Kr. This joint initiative highlighted the government's coordinated approach to addressing both environmental and social welfare priorities.
The Nasha Mukt Sikkim PMU team, comprising Inspector Sogyal Pintso and Inspector Kelvin Yongden, conducted specialised awareness sessions on the department's key programs.
Inspector Pintso delivered a comprehensive presentation on the Sahayogi Programme, detailing its four community-based components designed to combat substance abuse through targeted interventions. He elaborated on how Sahayogi Mitra engages school students as peer educators, Sahayogi Karmachari trains government employees as prevention advocates, Sahayogi Aama empowers rural women volunteers, and Sahayogi Sarathi educates transport workers about the dangers of substance abuse.
Inspector Yongden presented the broader framework of the Nasha Mukt Sikkim Campaign, highlighting its evidence-based prevention strategies, treatment protocols, and rehabilitation measures being implemented across the state. His presentation particularly emphasised the campaign's success in creating district-level task forces and community-based monitoring systems.
The PMU team also disseminated information about the department's educational scholarships for underprivileged students, transgender welfare schemes including healthcare access and livelihood opportunities, and legal protections under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The interactive session saw active participation from anglers, local community members, and youth, who engaged in meaningful discussions about these social welfare initiatives.
