Workshop on Swachha School Campaign 2025
5.4.2025, Gangtok : The Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), Rural Development Department, Government of Sikkim organized “One Day Teachers’ Workshop on Zero Waste” for Gangtok District under the Swachh School Campaign – 2025 at Janta Bhawan, Gangtok.
This Swachh School Campaign – 2025 which is a component of Sunaulo Sikkim, Swachh Sikkim Campaign being launched by the Department aligning the programs and initiatives with the theme of "Sunaulo, Samriddha, and Samarth Sikkim" celebrations under 50 Years of Statehood Celebrations. The Sunaulo Sikkim, Swachh Sikkim envisions making people aware on sustainable waste management practices, minimizing waste generation at source, segregation, and move towards efficient waste management systems. It targets school Teachers and school children to drive behavioral change, while engaging with religious bodies and institutions to promote sustainable waste management at places of worship and within communities. Under the Sunaulo Sikkim, Swachh Sikkim campaign, other sub campaigns namely Swachh Office campaign, Swachh School campaign, Swachh Gram Panchayat campaign and Mero Aastha, Sampurna Swachhata involving religious bodies will also be initiated during the year.
This Swachh School Campaign – 2025 aims to facilitate teachers to be primary change agents, empowering them to implement zero-waste initiatives, integrate sustainability into lesson plans and curriculum, and inspire students to adopt environmentally responsible and progressive habits. Through this approach, educational institutions can serve as models of waste reduction and management, influencing broader societal change.
In Sikkim, schools have been at the forefront of leading with green initiatives and Swachha Bharat Mission (Grameen) is committed in working to strengthen their ongoing efforts for green initiatives. There is a need to bring a targeted approach to these interventions and SBM(G) is collaborating with Zero Waste Himalaya to conduct a series of training for teachers to adopt zero waste actions in the schools. It further aims to develop a pool of Teachers to become change agents for taking forward the zero waste movement in the school ecosystem, develop a targeted calendar of activities for planned engagement by schools and their students.
The Workshop was attended by the School Teachers from 36 Secondary and Senior Secondary schools of Gangtok District. The workshop was chaired by Benu Gurung, Special Secretary and Mission Director (SBM-G), Rural Development Department who had also welcomed the participants and briefed on the basic concept of Swachh School Campaign. The workshop was also attended by the ADC(Development) Gangtok, Milan Rai, the Block Development Officers of Gangtok District, resource persons from Zero Waste Himalayas and the officials of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen).
