District Election Office Soreng Organises Awareness Programme for Persons with Disabilities (PwD)

Soreng, April 19 (IPR): The District Election Office in collaboration with District Administration Soreng organised the district level awareness programme for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) under Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP), as part of the commemorative activities for 50 years of Statehood at Community Health Centre (CHC) Soreng, today.
The primary objective of the programme was to facilitate the inclusion and identification of any left out Persons with Disabilities (PwD) electors and ensure their marking in the electoral roll.
While inaugurating the programme, Mr DR Bista ADC-I (Soreng) highlighted the motive and background of the programme. He then emphasised the need to identify Persons with Disabilities (PwD) and assist them in enrolling in the electoral roll. He also spoke about the importance of obtaining a Certificate of Disability, adding that the certificate will also facilitated during the programme with the presence of qualified doctors. Informing about the DESME centre within the hospital premises, he added that the centre was set up to support Persons with Disabilities (PwD) individuals and to address documentation issues, as a significant number of PwDs were found without documents.
Additionally, he informed about a special camp for eye check up by Greater Lions Vision Centre Soreng, which offered free examination, reading glasses and surgeries if required for Below Poverty Line (BPL) category.
The programme featured the health camps carried out by Dr. Prabhat Rai (Orthopaedist), Dr. Rajiv Gurung (Psychiatrist), Dr. Rachana Rai (ENT specialist), Dr. Tenzing O Wangyal (Eye specialist), Ms Tika Maya Chettri (Psychologist) and Mr Avinay Basnett (Audiologist cum Speech Therapist).
A total of 103 patients registered at the camps, where 42 individuals registered for Unique Disability ID (UDID) and 11 availed Aadhaar enrollment provided by the Department of Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Persons with Disabilities Welfare and DESME.
The programme was successfully conducted with the active participation of Mr DR Bista ADC-I (Soreng), Mr Santosh Kumar Allay ADC-II (Soreng), Ms Sakchum Lepcha SDM (Soreng), officers, officials from District Election Office, Health, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Persons with Disabilities and Welfare, DESME and Booth Level Officers (BLO).
