“One Day at School” programme an initiative of District Administrative Centre, Soreng District in collaboration with Horticulture Department Soreng District was successfully conducted at Government Secondary School, Sawaligaon, Soreng District.
The programme was conducted with the Students and Staffs of Govt. Sec. School, Sawaligaon, lead by the team of Horticulture Department, Soreng District in presence of Shri. Robin Gurung, Additional Director Horticulture, Shri. Subash Tamang, Deputy Director Horticulture, Shri. Prem Sunar, Junior Engineer Horticulture, Field Staffs of Horticulture Department, Samsing Pipalay GPU, Shri. Bijay Kumar Rai, Resource Person from IGS for promotion of Farmers Producers Organization (FPOs). Also had the presence of Shri. Tilak Sharma, Head Master, Govt. Sec. School, Sawaligaon and all teaching and non-teaching staffs, Hon’ble Panchayats of Samsing Pipalay GPU and most integral part of attendees were the dear Students of Govt. Sec. School, Sawaligaon.
The programme was conducted in two intervals of sessions in which the 1st session was the technical session about importance of Horticultural Practices in today’s life. On this Shri. Robin Gurung, Addl. Director Horticulture highlighted about various programmes and schemes implemented under Horticulture Department, and stressed upon engagement of young generation in Horticultual/ Agricutural Farming as it is the most important component of living a Human Life without which survival of any organism is impossible without food to eat. On behalf of Horticulture Department, Shri. Robin Gurung, Addl. Director Horticulture Department, Soreng District provided various inputs Viz: Agronet, Green House Plastic, Spray Machine, Vermicompost Unit, Organic Pesticides and Fungicides, Vegetable seeds to the School Fraternity Govt. Sec. School, Sawaligaon.
Similarly, Shri. Subash Tamang, Deputy Director gave detailed information about importance of Horticulture Science as a career option to the students to pursue higher studies in Agriculture/ Horticulture Science. Also addressed about Organic Farming Pracrices and its importance, as Sikkim being the only fully Organic State of the world as declared on 18 January 2016 by Honb’le Prime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Damodar Modi.
Also, a detailed session on scientific Nursery Raising and its Management of Various Vegetables, Fruits and other Horticultural Crops depending upon its suitability in that specific region right from Site Selection to land preparation, seed sowing, cultural practices, Integrated Pest, Disease and Nutrient Management and make Horticulture Sector as a successful business venture. Also had interactive session with all the students and school staffs about horticulture farming in the region and make best use of all the locally available resources as Horticulture/ Agriculture is the Future of coming Generation.
Shri. Prem Sunar, JE Horticulture Department highlighted about revolution of Farm Mechanization and use of advanced farm machineries and tools for the better and quick agricultural interventions to the students like use of Power Tillers for land preparation, Power weeder, Chaff Cutters, Pulverizers etc which reduces the manpower requirement and save time for better agricultural practices. He also assured to the students that Agriculture Engineering is one of the best future career options for the students.
During the 2nd interval of session, a practical demonstration on vermicomposting technique was demonstrated to the school staffs and students and proper management practices of kitchen Waste and rural compost making. Vermicomposting can be a successful economic venture in Agriculture field of entrepreneurship.
Lastly, Head Master of School Shri. Tilak Sharma highlighted about the programme and was found to be very fruitful and of utmost importance to the coming generation and urge the students to involve in Hoticultural/ Agricultural Farming for better physical, mental and healthy life style and for sustainable food security.
Programme ended with vote of thanks and mid-day meal lunch with students and staffs.
