The District Disaster Management Authority conducted a joint inspection today to assess the damages caused by the heavy downpour on April 21, 2024.
The inspection was led by ADC, Gangtok, Mr Sisum Wangchuk Bhutia accompanied by the Town planner, GMC, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, GMC and team, AE Roads (NH) and team, AE UDD and team, AE Sewrage and team, Deputy Director, DDMA, Training Officer DDMA and team
The team first visited the jhora near Sikkim University, which was blocked by logs and construction and demolition waste. The blockage had caused water to overflow onto the highway last night. Immediate removal of the logs is underway by Roads (NH) in coordination with DDMA and Gangtok.
Further, the public is advised not to dispose of construction and demolition waste in the jhora. The crown of the jhora was also inspected by the team.
Likewise, the team moved towards the Police Quarters at 6th Mile, where a landslide had occurred along the NH road. The debris has been cleared, and the adjacent jhora blocked by construction and demolition waste is currently being cleaned by GMC. In this location as well, the water channel was obstructed by Construction and Demolition waste.
Additionally, the team also visited Sushanta Gaon below Palzor stadium where issues pertaining to sewerage and drainage issues were taken care of. UDD in consultation with Sewrage has been directed to design a solution for the permanent restoration of drainage in the area.
The inspection concluded at jhora leading from New Market to Kazi Road. The main cause for the overflow of water was domestic pipelines running through the jhora thereby choking it. PHE has been directed to clamp all the pipelines running through the jhora in the area.
Further the outlet of the jhora needed to be increased to cater to all the drain water in the area. UDD has been directed for the same.
