Gangtok, 24th April 2025:
The 5th Teacher’s Conference 2024-25 on 'Sharing the Findings of Action Research on Foundational Literacy & Numeracy' concluded today.
The two-day conference was organised by the District Institute of Education and Training, DIET, Gangtok, Centre of Excellence at Tathagat auditorium hall. The NIPUN BHARAT implementation guidelines and the expanding roles of DIET as Centre of Excellence have also suggested DIET to facilitate Collaborative Action Research to enable practicing teachers to address the classroom issues and to develop an Academic Resource Pool in Foundational Literacy & Numeracy (FLN).
The objective of the conference is to motivate and encourage teachers to adopt the quality of reflective practitioners and also as a follow up.
Mr. Subbiah G, Director, Exams and Scholarship, Education Department was the Chief Guest for the Inaugural programme. Madam Anugrah Chamling, Joint Director, School Education, Education Department, Gangtok, was also present as the special guest. Ms. Bandana Chettri, Principal, DIET, Namchi also attended the same. The heads of schools and teacher participants from nearby schools were also present.
Shri Tushar G. Nikhare, IAS, District Collector cum Magistrate, Gangtok was the Chief Guest and Dr. Hannah Yonzon , JD as Special Guest for the Valedictory Programme. Ms. Deep Mala , Joint Secretary, Administration, Mr. Basudev Adhikari , Joint Directors, Gangtok and Madam Parumita Rai, Principal, DIET Gyalshing, District Officials, BRCs and CRCs under Gangtok District, Faculties and non-academic staff of SCERT & DIET were also present . The heads of schools and teacher participants from Lower Burtuk GJHS, PM Shri Middle Syari JHS, 4th Mile GJHS, CMCS Pangthang JHS and Upper Burtuk GSS were also present.
During the two-day conference, the teacher practitioners from different schools introduced the case studies they experimented with during their classroom teaching experience with students concerning Action Research on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy through PowerPoint presentations followed by discussions between the teachers and other participants attending the programme in which various observations and suggestions were made.

During the event, the dignitaries launched the Action Research Compilation 2023-24 and felicitated twenty- three teacher presenters with a certificate and a memento.
The Chairpersons Dr. Hannah Yonzon, Joint Director, Education Department, Ms. Larissa Lepcha, Faculty SCERT and Mr. Ajay Pokhrel, Principal attached to SCERT were also felicitated during the event. Ms. Beena Sharma, PGT, Commerce, GSSS, Enchey was also felicitated for sharing her presentation on her innovative Inter-disciplinary practices at the primary level during the Conference.
Shri. Tushar G. Nikhare, District Collector-cum-Magistrate, Gangtok, in his address, elaborated upon the importance of the role of teachers in elevating the standards of education. He congratulated the Institute and the teacher participants for the 5th Teachers Conference. In his message to the teacher participants, he emphasized upon the significance of humanity in the pursuit of intelligence and the difference a humane attitude would make in the life of a child. He lauded student trainees for their performance and creativity and urged them to keep their creative spark alive and not let it wane as they progress in life.
Mr. Subbiah G., Director, Exams and Scholarship, Education Department congratulated the Institute for keeping up the practice of conducting the Teachers Conference since 2018. He appreciated the collaborative effort of the DIET Faculty and the teachers who play an integral role in raising the standard of education. Sir also mentioned that the immense strides in technological development will never be able to replace the creativity of teachers. Hence, teachers play a significant role in the development and learning of their students.
Dr. Hannah Yonzon, Joint Director, Education Department, in her address, highlighted the significance of organising this type of Conference for teachers. She expounded upon the importance of reflective action research on the part of teachers in the development of students.
Shri Tshering Wangdi Bhutia, Principal DIET, briefly shared the background of the Conference in the light of DIET as Centre of Excellence which is also considered as one of the best practices of the institute. He informed that the objective of the programme is to provide a platform for teachers to learn, share and discuss their innovative ideas regarding teaching methodologies.
Further, he informed that the conference provides an opportunity to rejoice the collaborative effort of the institute and schools and celebrate the success.
The Master of Ceremony for the Inaugural Session was Ms. Durga Shrestha , Sr. Lecturer and the vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Yangzom Lachungpa, Lecturer, DIET. The Master of Ceremony for the Valedictory Programme was Ms. Karma Doma Kaleon, Sr. Lecturer which concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Tenzing Norzom Bhutia, Lecturer, DIET.
Ms. Aroona Pradhan, Sr. Lecturer & Dr. Tenzing Norzom Bhutia, Lecturer, DIET were the overall coordinators of the Conference.
