Labour Department Gyalshing Observes International Labour Day
Gyalshing, May 1:
The Labour Department, Gyalshing, successfully organised the International Labour Day 2025 celebration under the Sikkim Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Act, 1996 at Zilla Panchayat Bhawan, Gyalshing today.
The event was graced by Shri L. N. Sharma, Honourable MLA, Gyalshing-Bermiok Constituency, as the Chief Guest, and Shri Ganga Ram Chettri, General Secretary, Labour Wing, SKM Party, as the Guest of Honour. Other distinguished guests included the Shri Tshering Sherpa, Superintendent of Police, Gyalshing, Shri Suresh Rai, Additional District Magistrate, Assistant Engineer, Roads & Bridges, representatives from NHIDCL, Shiga Energy, officials from Health Department, Government contractors and other stakeholders.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Shri S. M. Subba, Assistant Labour Commissioner, Gyalshing, followed by an insightful briefing on various labour laws and welfare schemes under the BOCW Act, 1996 by Shri Tilak Chand Sharma, Senior Inspector.
In his address, Chief Guest Shri L. N. Sharma highlighted the various welfare schemes provided to workers under the BOCW Act by the State Government. He further urged principal employers to ensure timely disbursal of wages and resolution of other labour-related issues, reinforcing the government's commitment to safeguarding workers' rights and welfare.
Guest of Honour Shri Ganga Ram Bhattarai also spoke about the importance of protecting workers’ interests and reiterated the State’s dedication to improving labour welfare measures.
As part of the programme, the prestigious Shram Samman certificate was conferred on Mr. Harka Bahadur Gurung for his exemplary dedication and service, presented by the Chief Guest. Additionally, several labour welfare cards were distributed to eligible workers by the Guest of Honour, ensuring access to the benefits enshrined under the BOCW Act.
The celebration featured a vibrant cultural programme organised by the staff of the Labour Department, adding colour and spirit to the occasion.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Tanuja Chettri, Labour Inspector, marking a successful and meaningful observance of International Labour Day 2025.
