Training programme on protein bait spray for Chinese fruit fly management in Namchi.
Namchi,2 May:
The Horticulture Department of Namchi District conducted a comprehensive training cum awareness programme on management of chinese fruit fly through protein bait spray at Officers club, Namchi.
The training was imparted to field officials aiming to tackle Chinese fruit fly, a major pest threatening mandarin cultivation in the region.
Ms. Soroja Tamang, Deputy Director, Horticulture, Namchi addressed the participants about the importance of this technique. She urged all field functionaries to work with sincerity and in collaborative manner and sensitise farmers about this method. She also encouraged field functionaries for proper registry and documentation of the programmes implemented.
The technical session was led by Ms Tashi Choki Bhutia, Deputy Director, Horticulture, Gangtok, who provided a comprehensive overview on Area Wide Control Programme (AWCP) for Chinese fruit fly management.
Her presentation included pests origin ,its lifecycle, behaviour, nature of damage and modes of dispersal. She highlighted on the materials required for successful implementation, such as protein bait, spinosad, sprayers and marking tools. She also discussed the procedures for preparation of protein bait solution, its dosage calculation and appropriate spraying techniques. She further shared successful case studies, photographic and videographic documentation to support her presentation.
An interactive session followed, allowing participants to raise questions and clear doubts.
A concluding cum hands on training was led by Mr. Sangay Bhutia, Horticulture Inspector. He illustrated on protein bait preparation and application at a Sikkim mandarin orchard in Assangthang.
The programme witnessed the participation of Deputy Directors, Horticulture Development Officers and Village Level Workers from different subdivisions of the district.
