Ravaged Home Rebuilt and Handover Ceremony Held
BAC-Dzongu, 3rd May 2025:
In a moving testament to resilience and governmental commitment, the long-awaited reconstruction of a rural home in Lum Ward, Lum Gor Sangtok GPU, Lower Dzongu, culminated today in an official handover ceremony. The house, belonging to Lt. Thendup Lepcha, was ceremonially inaugurated by Hon’ble Area MLA and Minister for Forest, Wildlife, Environment, Science & Technology, and Mines & Geology, Shri Pintsho Namgyal Lepcha in the gracious presence of the Block Development Officer (BDO) Dzongu, ward panchayat members, and officials from the Block Administrative Centre (BAC) along with concerned line departments.
The reconstruction was carried out under the Reconstruction of Earthquake Damaged Rural Houses (REDRH) scheme-a flagship initiative of the Prime Minister’s Special Relief Package, envisioned to restore homes devastated by the catastrophic earthquake of 18th September 2011. The project emphasizes the use of earthquake-resilient architectural designs and has been spearheaded in rural regions of Sikkim by the Rural Development Department (RDD).
Although launched in 2012-13, progress on many homes remained stalled for over a decade due to a host of execution hurdles. However, under the dynamic leadership of the present government and the strategic infusion of additional state grants, the long-dormant initiative has regained momentum-bringing long-overdue justice to affected families.
Today’s handover is not merely the conclusion of a construction of REDRH awarded to Lt. Thendup Lepcha but a powerful emblem of restoration and renewal. The moment was marked with heartfelt expressions of gratitude from the family members of Lt. Thendup Lepcha, ward panchayat and the local community, who extended their profound gratitude to Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) for his unwavering dedication to the upliftment of marginalized households.
Equal recognition was accorded to Hon’ble MLA Shri Pintsho Namgyal Lepcha for his on-ground leadership, and to RDD Minister Shri Arun Upreti and Secretary Ms. Norzing Tshering for their tireless contributions in turning policy into tangible change.
“This is more than the return of a house-it is the restoration of safety, dignity, and hope”.
As Dzongu moves forward, today’s event stands as a shining example of what determined governance and community collaboration can achieve.
