ICAR Sikkim Centre Organizes Farmers–Scientist Interaction cum-Field Visit for Rural Livelihood Improvement of farmers at Sadam village of South Sikkim.
The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim Centre, Tadong, organized a Farmers–Scientist Interaction-cum-Field Visit on 24/10/2025 at Sadam village of South Sikkim under the NEH Component to promote rural livelihood improvement through scientific interventions in agriculture and allied sectors. The programme aimed to bridge the gap between research and field application by facilitating direct interaction between farmers and scientists.
During the event, farmers shared their field-level experiences, challenges, and success stories, while scientists provided solutions and technical guidance on improved crop management, soil health enhancement, and integrated farming systems suitable for the hilly terrain of Sikkim.
Dr. Ashok Kumar, Head, ICAR Sikkim Centre, Tadong led the field visit along with Dr Amit Kumar (Scientist, Agronomy) and interacted with farmers of Sadam. He emphasized the need for adopting location-specific, climate-resilient, and organic-based technologies to ensure sustainable agricultural development in the region. Dr. Kumar also highlighted the role of integrated approaches combining crop, horticulture, and livestock components in strengthening farm-level resilience and improving livelihoods under the NEH initiative. Dr. Kumar appreciated the active participation of the farmers and acknowledged their enthusiasm in adopting ICAR-recommended technologies. He assured continued technical support from the Centre through on-farm trials, demonstrations, and training programmes aimed at improving productivity and profitability in rural Sikkim.
As part of the event, agricultural inputs were distributed to the participating farmers, including seasonal winter vegetable seeds, oilseed crop seeds, and quality seed tubers of potato, aimed at promoting diversified cropping and enhancing household nutrition and income.
The programme was attended by 25 numbers of local farmers, village representatives, and ICAR scientists, and concluded with an open discussion session where farmers shared their feedback and suggestions regarding future interventions for improving productivity and livelihood opportunities in rural areas. The interaction reflected ICAR’s continued commitment to strengthening the research–extension–farmer interface and advancing the goals of sustainable and inclusive agricultural growth in the Himalayan region.
