Pakyong Commemorates International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025
Pakyong, December 03: The Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department (WCSCDWD), Pakyong District, commemorated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025 at the Namcheybong GPU, Pakyong, under the theme “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.”
Observed annually on December 3rd, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities highlights the invaluable contributions of persons with disabilities (PwDs) in advancing inclusivity and sustainable development, while reinforcing the importance of their meaningful participation in decisions that directly impact their lives.
During the programme, Mrs. Shakeela Rai, Panchayat President of 25-Namcheybong GPU, addressed the gathering. She encouraged PwDs to make use of the various services and welfare provisions available to them and highlighted the importance of utilizing these resources to improve their quality of life. She urged the community to work collectively toward building a more inclusive and supportive society and emphasized the need for joint efforts to remove barriers and ensure equal opportunities for all.
Mrs. Dikit Lepcha, Deputy Director of WCSCDWD and Social Welfare Officer, delivered the theme address. She emphasized the importance of fostering disability-inclusive societies to advance social progress and underscored the need to acknowledge the leadership of PwDs. She further advocated for a shared commitment toward creating an enabling environment where PwDs can thrive, participate fully in all spheres of life, and contribute meaningfully to society.
She also presented the implementation status of rights and welfare measures for PwDs by the WCSCDWD. She detailed the procedures for obtaining disability certificates and UDID cards, explained the disability pension scheme, outlined reservation benefits, and highlighted the availability of accessible toilets and parking facilities. Additionally, she elaborated on provisions in government hospitals, public transport services, and special schools implemented by both the Central Government and the Government of Sikkim. She advised all attendees to approach their respective GPU offices, where Social Welfare Inspectors are available to provide necessary assistance.
The event was attended by Zilla Panchayat Members; Ward Panchayats of Pakyong District; Mr. Hari Rizal, OSD to the MLA Namchepong, Mr. Bhaichung Bhutia, and officials from various district offices.
As part of the commemoration, a Sugamaya Yatra, a rally led by PwDs was conducted from the main road to the GPU Office, Namcheybong. Participants raised slogans promoting inclusion and empowerment.
This was followed by a cake cutting ceremony. PwDs were felicitated, and gifts were distributed as a token of love and encouragement.
The programme also featured the distribution of assistive aids to beneficiaries by CRC Assam Lingzey.
